Anyone find it spooky that banks that are going bust are banks holding 10 figure and up assets yet we dont see a wave of community banks going under? Smaller banks should have more CRE liabilities on their books. Am I missing something? FRC had awful books though. Noninterest liabilities over noninterest assets was too high for years.

Not anymore than I find any other business that did dumb shit or was in the wrong market going bust.
SVB was just fucking stupid, the Risk Manager spent her last month before the bank was seized planning a Gay Pride Parade, in San Fran, a city that has Gay Pride Parades weekly.
FRC is the recipient of the FANG bust, and really has themselves to blame for not diversifying markets or looking ahead to what probably should have been a noticeable real-estate bubble.

That means the FDIC needs to squeeze $60b-$80b (or, if DC feels like being extra generous to big banks, tack on the extra $30b) out of $173b in loans. Per their last update, SVB cost them $22b out of $125b they had on hand: https://www.fdic.gov/news/press-releases/2023/pr23030.html

Unless FRC's entire loan book are $1m mortgages given to crackheads sight unseen, the FDIC won't have to shell out more than like $20b, tops.

That's oddly not what SIPC insurance is for. According to SIPA customer's assets are not counted or usable by brokers to cover liabilities (it's a criminal offence to do so) and need to be transferred to those customers or to a new broker. The insurance exists to pay out smaller accounts as that is just inconvenient to do. It's what happened to Stearns customers when they went under, think BofA picked them up.

>It does up to 250K.
that's if you were holding cash. if you were holding 250k worth of stocks, it would not pay out 250k cash - it would give you back your shares of the stocks from what i understand

>>54801130
>It's weirdly safer than banks.
the banks are FDIC insurance, which is coverage on cash in a bank account up to 250k per institution. FDIC insurance is decent for regular people. if you're really rich, FDIC and SIPC will not be enough coverage for you. you'll have to create new accounts with several different banks and brokerages and split up your holdings between them so they're all insured

you'll probably have to buy a bunch of US treasuries with all your extra cash since their backed by the "full faith and credit of the US gov't." that and buy a bunch of gold bars and store them yourself

You could argue it first started in 2017 but it's been solidly in action since 2018 and reached public consciousness as being a real thing and the only explanation for the state of the world in 2019, so 4-6 years at this point. If the last time it happened is any indication we've got another six years to go so the best advice I can give is hold off on the suicide to spit on the clown until it kills itself. Still doesn't matter, it'll be back in another few years after it dies to lead us into another war about two decades after this one wraps up.
