There's a theory going around at the moment that if you have a "Plan Holdings" entry on your computershare account, even if it has 0 shares, even if you have dividend reinvestment disabled, even if you have no recurring buy setup and no limit orders active, that your booked shares in that account can still be used as locates to borrow by the DTCC and thus anyone using their services namely shorts. There's no way to remove plan holdings from a computershare account entirely as it's kept on that account for seven years for record keeping purposes although they did recently add a "hide zero balances" function that only affects the GUI.
