No one deserves to live. It's what people are willing to do to get it. Regardless, she is not correct. I lived just fine on $17 an hour in San Diego, albeit in a low-income studio. I'm now making double that but things are still tight at times, and I am considered the bottom rung of middle class. The fact is you can make do with what you have to, to a certain degree. When I was making $17 I was working ridiculous amounts of overtime and getting a second job at times to cover bills. Saving was out of the question, I recall at a gathering once someone recommended I set aside 10% of every paycheck, he was surprised when I told him that 10% would be the determinant between making rent and being late.

So while she is wrong, her underlying point which is poorly-expressed because liberals are always smug insufferable retards is that working at these lower wages without a reliable safety net is absolutely miserable, and not motivating in any way to better your life. You end the day exhausted, certainly not with inspiration to make a risky venture in another area or with the necessary funds to save anything. There are a large number of people living in these situations, making $15/hr and just barely scraping by, and that is all they will be without a direct intervention from the outside.

Again, as I earlier stated no one is entitled to anything. At the same time, however, we should strive for a society in which every adult worker can capably provide for themselves independently. The modern state of labor is such that the average --and I stress average here-- adult has no assurance that they are contributing to a system that is ultimately in their benefit. It is difficult for a large percentage of these jobs, most of them service, to be viewed as necessary by society while also paying to such a low level that their workers will live in squalor unless being supported by other people.

>>54783378
You don't have to make $30 an hour to not live in squalor. You won't be able to afford a house in San Francisco, but then ask yourself if your contribution to society warrants that. If you're working in fast food or retail, then the answer is probably not. If that's the route you chose or all that you were capable of, you can still live very comfortably in a rural area, likely in a flyover state. Raising the minimum wage wouldn't change this.

Of course, but in those cases the accompanying minimum wage is what is being debated. The number does not matter, but the quality of the life being lived. I fully admit someone making $15/hr in South Carolina may be making a living equivalent to $30/hr in say Los Angeles, but the minimum wage in South Carolina is $7.25, which is the wage the same worker will likely command if they were to up and relocate there. Can someone living at that wage afford to live independently there? I would wager likely not very well. Someone making these lower wages really doesn't have the ability to do much but hope.

At the end of the way we need to continue to encourage income mobility, and today that is just not being done adequately. More and more youngsters are simply checking out. On a smaller scale that is just life, on a larger scale that spells trouble for society. I can't say that raising minimum wage radically will fix the situation, or even be ultimately beneficial at all. But what I certainly CAN say is that what we have been doing so far is not working, and someone with a big fucking brain needs to make some changes quickly.

There's so many ways to solve the underlying problem than just a massive minimum wage increase.
The problem: there are a class of workers that we simultaneously call "essential" and "unskilled", that cannot afford to live in (or near) the cities they work. The issue here is primarily affordable housing. If a city is going to demand essential workers, it must also be expected to build and subsidize affordable housing instead of luxury developments.
At the same time, workers must also be paid a fair value for their labor. Companies must be punished when profits are used for buybacks rather than investment in R&D and raises. Effective regulation here would essentially make the minimum wage argument obsolete.
>>54783892

Raising minimum wage isn't going to solve the problem of scarcity. Minimum wage being $7.25 or $30 doesn't put more chicken or beef in the grocery store, doesn't build more housing, doesn't deliver more fuel to gas stations... It would be nice if the minimum standard of living for everyone were the equivalent of what you could get for $30/h today (not talking Manhattan or Silicon Valley), but to provide that standard of living to the lowest strata means production of basically everything must be vastly increased.

wagies just doesn't understand why they are paid.
you browse reddit and u will see wagies feel like a salary is a "human right" and not something you earn by providing value.

They are against getting fire because they deserve a "wage".

They don't understand wagie celings, you can't pay a washer $50 an hour to meet his needs.

They don't understand that businesses are created by adventurous, smart and entusiastic people with a vision.
If the business sells, let's say, a service: washing dishes for $10 a time, it needs to OUTPHASE the wage they pay and expenses so that they can still stay in business.

They, the wagies, just doesn't understand this very simple concept.

They don't understand most restaurants runs out of business yet wagies demand considerably higher wages, like $30, when not even the restaurant can manage?

I say, they demand too much and the next time they are about to sign a work contract that says WHAT THEIR WAGE IS BEFORE THEY SIGN THE THING let's remind the wagies they agreed to that salary and if they don't like it, find a different job instead of complaining of "low wages".

Or perhaps, recommend them to start their own business and pay the employees the wage they demand.

I understand what you're getting at. A lot of scarcity is artificial, for example due to planned obsolesce, not training enough doctors, not building more oil refineries, restricting real estate development etc. This is compounded with a lot more global middle class than existed immediately post-ww2 competing to consume the same resources, so yes, scarcity is a huge factor, but obviously not the only one.

Total red herring. Prices are the way they are because producers set them. About 1/3 of all food in America is thrown away (most by grocery stores that can't move product). The best part? It's perishables that are most affected, meaning fresh vegetables, meats, and dairy. Consumers refuse to buy at a certain price, and producers won't budge on bringing down prices.

agreed but raising wages won't fix anything -- it's really a cost of living crisis, with housing being the greatest offender. the solution would have multiple points, mainly protecting low IQ nigger cattle against themselves by having more stringent DTI and credit requirements on mortgages while also outlawing 30 year mortgage products, thereby artificially increasing the supply of middle class homes by pushing reckless dumb nigger debtmaxxed poorfags out of the housing market and onto the renting market. reforming zoning laws on a national level would help with apartment/multi-family construction, as would implementing federal tax regulations on people or entities that own multiple properties, especially those which sit vacant for extended periods of time. public housing should make a comeback to cordon niggers into containment zones and reduce the "no niggers" premium on non-public housing apartment rentals.

Part 1
Reducing wealth inequality is a complex and challenging issue that would require systemic changes and policies at various levels. Here are some potential strategies for cutting wealth inequality in half:

Progressive taxation: A progressive tax system, where people with higher incomes pay a larger share of their income in taxes, could help reduce wealth inequality. This could include increasing tax rates on the highest income earners, or implementing a wealth tax on the net worth of the wealthiest individuals.

Strengthening social safety net programs: Strengthening social safety net programs, such as unemployment benefits, food stamps, and affordable housing, could help reduce poverty and provide a safety net for people who are struggling financially.

>Based on historical data, the median household income for the middle quintile (middle 20%) of households was around $68,703 in 2019. If wealth inequality was cut in half and the middle class experienced a proportional increase in their income, the median household income for the middle quintile could potentially increase to around $85,879.
>In the United States, the bottom 40% of households based on income are typically defined as those with incomes below the 40th percentile. According to data from the US Census Bureau, the median household income for the bottom 40% of households in 2019 was around $35,977.

If wealth inequality was cut in half through a combination of policies such as progressive taxation, social safety net programs, and labor protections, the salary of the bottom 40% could potentially increase by a significant amount. However, the specific impact on individual incomes could vary based on various factors, including the specific policies implemented to reduce wealth inequality, economic conditions, and other factors.

Assuming that the reduction in wealth inequality leads to a proportional increase in the incomes of the bottom 40% of households, their median household income could potentially increase to around $53,965. However, it's important to note that the impact on individual incomes could vary based on various factors, and defining the bottom 40% can also be challenging as it encompasses a broad range of income levels and can vary based on factors such as location and household composition.

I'd say since the 90's it's been this circle of events: Drilled into high school kids "Go to college", they start out life deep in debt, get a house, more debt, get a car, even more debt tossed on the pile. So the debt plus the expenses of just living means you have jack shit saved for retirement at 65. Sure your house will be paid off but that's the only thing good to say about it. In the 80's it was still possible for you to make it without college and college was still affordable if you went. College wasn't the scam it is now; "hey instead of teaching what you need for a career lets toss on a bunch of shit you'll never use and stick you will the higher costs" The rub; Due to everyone having a degree in something the college education is not that impressive anymore. HR goes "So what" when you put it down on your paperwork. So you paid all the money for a piece of 8x10 paper that is not that valuable.

I WANT to pay someone $20 to do the job, but I would be forced to pay $14 gun to my head to hire someone because a penny more and it's not fucking worth it to me. I also WANT someone good for the job, which requires a higher wage. So if all the tax bullshit and other bs fees were gone I would not hire someone for $14 an hour, it would be wayy more. It's objective fact that you will have a lower standard of living today for the same job than you did decades ago. Mortgage rates are 7% and housing prices have far outpaced wages (and even our bullshit measures of "inflation"). You don't have to deal with the repercussions of them being derelict in the responsibilities that you've forced on them. The inattentive burger flipper poisons someone, now you have to pay taxes to support the FDA or someone you employ has to pay extra for the burger they purchase, in order for the company to cover food safety training, so now it's more money out of your pocket another way (and probably more because there are middlemen). It happens once and now your have to pay forever, instead of just employing people who care and paying would-be corner-cutters to stay the fuck away. You must understand, all of society is a protection racket, it's just where you decide to pay the bill (and that choice influences how much you pay).

Their labor simply isn't worth that much though. You might be right that they have more negative effects on society, by working for low wages, but is paying them off with UBI really more economical? These jobs simply cannot exist at higher wages, nobody values them that much. If a burger flipper required $25/hr we would just have less burger flippers and society would be fine.

The government (and by that I mean the shareholders of the government, and by that I mean who owns the federal reserve) WON'T be concerned with the infrastructure of the daily lives of there populace UNLESS it negatively effects them directly WHICH IT DOESEN'T. I would argue at one point it did, specifically in the United States after WWII (look at the quality of life the average boom boom had from the 1950s to the 1980s. But thanks to outsourcing, and after that automation, and after that outsourcing via automation it really doesn't matter if the average joe hates his life or not (and don't get me started on the shit the kicked off in 1971).

This is because human labor is INFLATIONARY, not only because of the increase in population but also because of AI/ML x automation etc. With no motivation to keep most people around, you will not be rewarded for nothing, LET ALONE PRETENDING MACKING AT EXCEL SHEETS IS CREATEING VALUE. In order for your UBI plan to work, you would need sound money that haven't been aloud to exist sense the late 1890s and an actually mechism in place to motivate the central planners of this system to give people gibs. I can't think of any right now, but I can think of a thousand reasons to keep people living paycheck to paycheck while there inheritance inflates away on the off chance there parents didn't blow it all on C6s and Tee times.

Never mind that houses today have increased the amenities they offer, a bare unfurnished and gutted house of today is surrounded by amenities and conveniences in gross excess of what was available yesterday simply by virtue of living in a town of the present day.
If you live in a city, the house of today offers you access to next day shipping, grocery deliveries in two hours, an imax theatre a mile away, and 5G wifi and broadband internet. And even ignoring that, the -potential- of the land a home sat on yesterday pales in comparison to the potential of the land today. You can lament that you live in a more complex age, but you don't get to blame your failings to keep up with the greed of others -- it's just you failing to keep up.
In the yesterday of yesterday a dude who carried shit in a pail could raise a family of four, but in the recent yesterday he could not because of indoor plumbing and sewers. Likewise, yesterday a factory worker could support a family of four, but not today because of robots and the complexity of what is being produced.
Level up your contribution or piss off. Shit pail carriers do not deserve a wage commensurate with supporting a family of four in the age of single nanometer semiconductor powered machine learning enabled just in time supply chains.

This is the entire point of the argument. The vast majority of the population is not capable of leveling up like that. We created a society dependent on exponential growth in the population, but that population cannot actually exist within it successfully. It's completely unsustainable, and will lead to societal unrest. They're bigger fucking clowns than the faggot jannies on this board.

So what should be done to address the fact that a lot of people can't afford shit any more, if raising the minimum wage is a non-starter? It always seems like people/the government say we just can't do that, but then the conversation just dies there. I don't even necessarily agree with the people who think raising the minimum wage will fix the problem, but at least they're acknowledging that there's a problem.
