I was a Linux nerd decades ago and really believed in the importance of open source, privacy, etc. I used every possible means to maintain privacy for the pure principle of the matter, and honestly "had nothing to hide". And it wasn't just government, but corporate, that I didn't want to benefit from anything to do with me. This all included using Tor. But at a certain point, I came to realize that all of that was causing me to "stick out like a sore thumb" and now I am the opposite. I want "them" to just see everything I do. Part of the reason also is that I would rather just *assume* they can see everything I do *regardless* of whatever claims any particular privacy tech makes.

VIX futures are in contango so yeah if you have to keep rolling and you're trying to hold contracts for months at a time you'll get rekt. It's a short term trade. It's not as bad as people think. If you'd bought front month VIX futures contracts in August you still could have gotten out with a profit in the March VIX pump despite contango and despite rolling multiple times. And that's the front month which is most affected by contango. You don't have to buy that one as there are usually 8 months worth of expiration dates you can choose from all of which have successively less steep contango. It's not a trade for everybody and it's not a trade you should try to hold more than a couple of weeks so timing is important but as things stand right now if you get in I think you'll get out at a nice profit in the near future
