its because the hide all the underlying technology. I remember forums had bbcode which was basically dumbed down HTML. Some forums even had straight up HTML. If you wanted to have a shiny looking signature, you had to code it in. Today's social media platforms do not expose any of the underlying technology. The closest is maybe reddit which has some limited markdown but they've even obfuscated that behind a WYSIWYG editor after they redesigned the site.
