Can playing Poker be a good source of income? If yes, where do I play?

It's a lot like chess, in that only the top 0.001% of players can make a living. You spend hundreds travelling and entering tournaments with no guarantee of breaking even.
I'd even say it's more frustrating than chess, because you can be a 20 year veteran and get your ass blasted by some kid because he got lucky.

High-level chess players can at least sell courses and teach lessons to make a living. You'll just lose money playing poker lmao

I play 200-500z at pokerstars and I made 170k online and around 25k live last year. Don't be discouraged, poker still can be a lucrative career, but you need to do it right.
>live tourneys
Never play live tourneys,! Between high rake, travel expenses, hotel fees and ridiculously high variance... it's impossible to make money consistently. The best players in the world have 6 months losing stretches.
>online cash
is the way to go. You just play from your home every day and you can put a lot of volume to offset variance. Last year I didn't have a single losing month after rakeback.
>live cash
can be great if you have access. 3 years ago I was in US and I played in some awesome games in LA and Baltimore. Casino in Baltimore(I forgot the name) had insane 5 card PLO game. I sit ridiculously tight and watched everyone around playing every fkn hand betting non-stop and ended up winning 9k in one night in 5/10 game. I was dreaming about enrolling in a community college in Baltimore and play there everyday, but then pandemic happened. Live cash games are much easier than online games obviously.

>how to study
Don't repeat my mistakes. I wasted years of my life studying by myself. Best and fastest way to learn is to hire a coach. twoplustwo.com has a coaching section and there are several solid coaches who beat mid-high stakes games online. I recommend Kanaxis and Brokenstars, they charge 100-150$ per hour. Brokenstars is a better coach, but Kanaxis is stronger theoretically, he is a GTO nerd. Don't bother with low stakes coaches, they are not good and you will end up obtaining bad habits. If you take 40 coaching session with them spread across a year, you spend 4000$-6000$. If you put 2-3 hours of studying every day it should be enough to move you to NL100 where you can make 7-8k PER MONTHS. That's a fantastic roi... btw, some poker coaches can be dicks. Years ago I studied with Alvin Lau and once he called me retrd and went on a 5 minute rant how braindead I am for making a stupid mistake on the river. He helped me to move from NL25 to NL100 in couple months though, so I don't hold grudge. Brokenstars can be dick too.

In the very beginning you need to memorize preflop ranges. I use pokeriq.pro to draw and drill my preflop ranges. runitonce, com has a huge collection of videos and it costs just 25$ for essential subscription. I highly recommend videos by Qing Yang. He explains poker conceptually and usually shows several examples from very different situations. He also has youtube channel called giraffe poker, but his rio videos are better. When you move to mid stakes you can buy cash game course. I recommend the one by Kanu7.

Go to a casino on Friday and Saturday night. The better players there farm all the casual players that go there and play with all their friends and just get drunk and want to have a bit of fun. They love people like that.

No. Even the best poker players will eventually go to zero if they keep playing continuously. There's math behind it. The risk/reward is such that you can't make a living off skill you need either less risk or more reward in the style of gambling. And that's not poker.

>> No.54653378

In order to make decent money it becomes a full time job. So honestly, no. It actually becomes more stressful than a normal 9-5 as the cold/hot streaks are crazy.

Nah unlike stuff like blackjack where you play against the house as long as you're a above average poker player you should come out positive in the long run with proper payroll managment. The bigger the positive difference between you and the average poker player the more in favour your stats become.

OP, 80% of players lose,15% break even and 5% win long term. Even if people have lucky streaks they rarely ever tell you in detail about the losing streaks, the bad times, how shitty they feel when they lose etc.

Poker is a hard way to make an easy living.
