Inflation makes people poorer, they spend less. Less spending means less corporate profits, less corporate profits means lower valuations, lower valuations mean number go down, number go down means more flight to "safety" such as bonds, which also make you poorer because of inflation. The end result is high inflation combined with a recession, aka. stagflation.
