I kinda figured shorts were fucked when they couldn't get it to go to zero when it was at twenty something cents, they tried real hard but ultimately just gave every degen gambler the mother of all entry prices and since shit's so fucked and everyone is so broke yolo'ing one or a few grand into a roulette wheel tier bet was attractive. I think the gameplan of being massively short and orchestrating a market crash is something they wanted to do. The problem being once retail bit down like a shitbull on GME and some other heavily shorted stocks they go into big fucking trouble. Suddenly they can't orchestrate a selloff because people were literally flooding into a weakness they created. And if the collapsed everything at the same time and GME was not sold off suddenly they would not have the necessary margin to maintain the shorts. We now have a situation where retail is basically able to consume Wallstreet. So whatever crash is coming is suddenly becoming their liability as opposed to the usual ebb and flow of market pricing that they can hedge/control. And you are right, when we're all getting fucked over by inflation, shitty wages, sky high housing prices etc, why the hell shouldn't everyone be gambling their money. And the big problem for Wallstreet is a blue chip stock paying 5% is still a losing investment when I can cross my fingers on blowing out a hedge fund in a short squeeze.

This is market price manipulation at its most obvious.
