does anyone else find the notion of black friday completely ridiculous? somehow the corporations of america managed to collaborate and created this random day to run "sales" and convince the sheeple to buy everything.

seriously, they have managed to impart some kind of psychological sense of urgency on the entire population. it's mind blowing. people literally die trying to get shit they don't even need on this day.

I find it brilliant.

>> No.545049

What date is black friday? I've never seen it in Europe.

>> No.545050

It's the start of the holiday shopping season, a hugely important time to many businesses. There's nothing ridiculous about it except for how consumers react sometimes (stampedes).

It's the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 28th).

Non-American here:
Never seen these sales, but what is it like?
Every item in the store 50% off, including newly stocked merch?
Or just every item that's been sitting on the shelf for 6 months, new products set aside.

>>545060
They will have a separate flyer with only certain items on sale. They will advertise a $300 tv for $98 and say limited quantities.

>> No.545066

Umm how is it a bad thing..... i get to buy things for 50% less than I normally would pay
If you're mad at the sheeple that go out and buy things they never would then you might as well be bitching about every marketing ploy ever. You're clearly not a /biz/ness man.

>>545063
Rightio
How do they do it though? Do they just bump the price up all year in antcipation of participating for the Black Friday sale?
ie. that TV was never worth $300, only $50 the entire time

>>545066
Are the things you buy things that are valuable though? Or is it mostly just no-brand things.

>> No.545072

>>545069
Many times the sale comes from the manufacturer, not the retailer (i.e. the same item will be on sale everywhere). Many branded items go on sale.

I find the idea of camping out for hours waiting for doors to open and then stampeding ridiculous.

I also hate how its the day after thanksgiving, and instead of spending the night with family giving thanks and eating turkey, people are either waiting in line or going to an early-bird black friday special.

But I really really like cheap stuff

>> No.545077

Actually, many stores open their doors on Thanksgiving now.

And to expand, Black Friday is the day (or days if you include the ones that are open on Thanksgiving) where stores generally have 'the best sales,' which causes the nigs and white trash to literally stampede one another to get whatever useless product they want.

>> No.545079

>>545060
it's just like every other sale in America. they just say 50% off and people buy it regardless of the price. some stores run promotions where they attract attention by probably taking a loss on a few items (17" LED TV for only $29.95!!!! only in limited quantities)

and shit like

it's all a huge scam

>actually giving thanks on thanksgiving
Ha. It's just a day that you have to put up with family while gorging. Grocery stores have their own version of black friday before thanksgiving.

Every holiday is just marketing. Black Friday just drops all pretense of being a holiday at all.

>> No.545090

I love it, how could you not? I've wanted a new PC so why don't I just wait a few months and pay 30-50% less than I normally would?

I saved 300$ on a refrigerator last year and 400$ on a TV the year before that.

Welcome to the church of consumerism. You know what god America worships in practice, don't be deceived by the prevalance of so called Christian Churches everywhere, those are in on the act.

Its pathetic consumerism.
Most of the people who participate in it don't really have the money to do so.

It is ridiculous, but so is the word 'sheeple', and anyone who uses it.

This. Can't be early enough. And has anyone else noticed the trend of the advertised sales being complete shit? When I was a kid, I remember ads would say, "Buy a 99 cent TV!" and other ridiculous prices that succeeded in drawing people out. Then they started limiting the number of items on sale (only five 99 cent TVs). Now, it seems like they don't even try. 20% off of a select (going to be outdated in five seconds) TV! And that's all you get. Completely shitty sales, but people are still going out of tradition or turning to online sales (which are just as pathetic).

>> No.545249

>>545177
I imagine it was a chicken and egg scenario, where corporations responded to consumer reactions which in turn effected corporations.

The limited quantities is the key. 200 people come for the discounted tv, but only 40 get one. The other 160 are likely to still buy stuff.

>> No.545267

I find BlackFriday funny because most of the stuff they put on sale is just basically stuff they want to get rid of before Christmas. Prices are cheaper aftet Christmas.

Well black Friday is the official start of Christmas shopping!
