Point to point is a bad idea to do first, it's why California fucked up their HSR. It's better to just expand out local metro lines to nearby cities, and then do dedicated intercity lines, then once people and making weird transfers to take the train between metro areas, ONLY THEN do you install a HSR line. You have to build up the ridership from the ground up, otherwise you have a train to another city where you need a car anyway or you're fucked (Detroit).

It also doesn't help that most traffic through those areas isn't to or from Chicago or Detroit: it's people on the major interstates passing through. An HSR that terminates in those cities does nothing to help them if you're not making it an overland ferry where you load your car on a train and then unload it at the other end to continue on your way.

I have mentioned this before but this seems like the thread to mention it again. Chicago is really at a crossroads right now.

It is going to be VERY interesting to see how we vote in this coming election as it will completely shape the next 30-40 years of growth (or lack thereof) in this city.

Detroit has an issue with a dying industry in the US (automobiles). The same issue can be seen in SF right now with the tech sector. These are boom towns based around a singular industry.

One of the advantages Chicago has is it's pretty large corporate diversity. McDonalds, Boeing, financial firms etc all share the same space downtown. Life Sciences is a pretty large industry moving into town as well, and all of those industries keep the city relatively insulated during economic downturns.
