I restored classic cars growing up and painting is the way to go, that shits gonna peel off and you're gonna hate your decision.
10-15k for a full proper paintjob will last the life time of the vehicle if stored indoors.
My dads cars still look like they were painted yesterday and he made those in the 60's/70's

You can't paint some effects that you can easily get with wrap.
Specially matte colours.

But yeah, a good paint job outlast the wrap several times. The only good decision about wrapping is that you have factory paint under the wrap and it don't degrade with the sun.

Dad was born in 1936 and his brother were both artists trained by a ww2 battle of the bulge veteran.
A full restoration meaning break down to the frame and rebuild everything was 20k minimum in the mid 2000's
Unless they were 65 mustangs or volkswagons just because the parts are cheaper and way easier to find.

Checked. I did this to my car. Most of it peeled off fine, but one quarter panel peeled off pain with the wrap (I recommend only peeling off on warm days in direct sunlight, and to not wrap repainted areas). I suspect the quarter panel had been touched up and that's why it peeled off. Wrap looked good for about 1 month, then after being parked outside it started staining and looking like shit (3M wrap, cost about $2k total).

oof that's rough I never have taken off wraps but knowing what I know about cars and paint it just makes sense, the sun bakes into the clearcoat which is layered into the paint so one good rip and like removing anything sticky it tends to not want to come in one piece.

Painting cars is an alchemical art sure any novice can do it but if you don't take the proper steps it will likely fail, or not last the length it should.

Any advice on how to fix it? I wanted to just repaint the quarter panel but everyone is saying to redo at least the entire left side. The car's not worth a $20k paintjob though and I don't really mind if the new black is slightly different than the old. The body shop I went to repainted the bumper awhile back and I'm pretty satisfied with that, but they have a massive waiting list.

Absolutely can just paint the quarter panel you'll need someone to "blend" it since it runs into the top but basically they find a line to can match up and end the new blendcoat and sand it into the old clearcoat and will look seemless,
Ask if anyone can blend a quarter panel a decent painter should be able to pull it off.

Also mind you my 10-20k paintjobs usually meant switching from say Blue to Red, meaning I gotta break the whole fucking car down otherwise a cheap faggot wouldn't paint the jams and you see see the color shifting every time someone opened the doors/hood and would look like a ronald mcdonald car, since your cars black and you want it black, assuming little to no body damage probably paint that car for 5-6k entirely.
You could do Maaco but know they don't clearcoat they use 1 stage enamel and it's like a turtle coat meaning they just paint it heavily on, usually runs and they don't sand the basecoat since it's enamel meaning you get tons of imperfections and will feel rough.

But it's cheap.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the tips. Paint code says PX (Brilliant Black) but it's just a regular black paint (original to the car but in good condition, here's a better pic of the paint before the wrap).

Yeah, I want the car in yellow like in Initial D, but the black looks so good that it's a waste to spend money on anything short of a good job I guess, and those are expensive. I honestly wouldn't mind skimping on the door jambs and stuff since yellow exterior and black on the engine bay / door jambs would at least go well together.

I've seen other wrap jobs last for 5-7 years before starting to show wear (which I would still honestly still live with) but I must've chosen the wrong wrap, the wrong shop, and the wrong conditions (parked outside) so I guess I probably ended up with the worst case. But still, $2k put towards $5-6k for a paintjob would've been better spent.

Parking it outside did it, the sun hits those panels at 200 degrees on hot days, I know I've worked on them usually have to park them in the shade for an hour or two before I'm not burning my skin off, it baked the fucker on there, not unlike how clearcoat fades over time, it's the UV rays breaking it down, now that can be polished out but the wraps stuck.

Car looked good man looks like little to no damage, if you avoid jams then you can cut costs but will lower your vehicles value going away from original, a competent painter can blend that back easily, give it a proper touch up and you'll be pretty close to normal for less than 600-700 bucks.

You have literally no idea how automotive paint is done, I know many of you here are trailer trash or beaner jeets but the cost alone on materials to paint a vehicle starts around 3k-4k before you even start.
>WHY SO HECKIN EXPENSIVE.
You can goto maaco where they spray a chemical adhesive to your old clearcoat and pour enamel over it, which will chip away in three years.

Anyone with knowledge in this craft would know real painting isn't simply "spray painting metal"
