I know fuck all about cars and I'm not sure if I should be driving a hybrid, EV, or PHEV. I don't about 18k miles per year. I'm going to buy new because I'm not poor, but I don't want to buy some overpriced German money sink either. Probably something Japanese. What's the most economical option, but still fun to drive, and will make my neighbors jealous, especially that fucking asshole Shane across the street.

Depends on how you drive and where you drive. I have an EV and a big ass American pickup truck. Can you charge at home overnight? How far is work? Can you charge at work? The name of the game with an EV is if it's not moving it's charging.

>> No.54427769

>>54427499
If you have a house where you can set up the charging station, and don't intend to travel more than 300 miles in one drive, EV could work. Hybrids are good to go, plugin hybrid just means you can plug it in for a larger battery store to run on electric for longer. You also need a house for this as a PHEV you'll need to plug in daily or the plugin feature is useless because it WILL run out daily, it's designed to. Whereas a full EV is designed to go longer, you don't have to charge it every day unless you drive so much that it gets low.

So plugging in basic requires a house and no long distance travel, unless you want to leave your car at a charging station and make risky road trips along charging station routes. Hybrids that charge themselves with the gas engine are g2g, I have one and like the hybrid aspect of it. I wouldn't get a Prius again though. It's an extremely dangerous car that I've almost ran people over while backing up (shit visibility) and almost lost control and crashed in several times. It does not feel safe, they literally built it off of an old golf cart design and it still feels like driving a goddamn flimsy golf cart. Their goal was to make the cheapest hybrid possible and they achieved that but at the cost of a lot of components being cheaply made or material being removed to make it lighter. Most hybrids and EVs suffer from this, fair warning.

You honestly probably be able to get away with driving there and back and just charging for the night, depending on how long you have at home before your next shift (if you're working 12s in a row for example you'll have less charging time at home before leaving again). Also you'll have to look into if you want to get a full level 2 charger at your home or just do wall plugs which will take significantly longer to charge to full

EV's are all sorts of fucked with lithium batteries exploding. Also are terrible for longer distance travel. Hybrids will also net you extra gas range without relying solely on the grid to spend 45 minutes to use a "fast" charger. Whats nice now as that hybrid in the past just meant Prius, but now many car manufactures just make a hybrid version of their regular line up.
https://www.toyota.com/hybrid/
Might be harder to find or used, but Camry TRD or Avalon TRD hybrid would be good for not looking like a vagina while also practical.

Also, if you buy Japanese make sure it is actually quality Japanese. No Kia or Hyundai with their exploding batteries because its Korea shit. Remember years ago when those Galaxy S phones exploded? Yeah, Korea shit. Also stay away from Nissan, they used to be good decades ago but now they are owned by French nigger shit and have terrible part especially the transmissions which will go bust before you hit 100k miles.

Hybrids or EVs made zero economic sense. You will pay at least $10k more for a hybrid, and much more for an EV that isn't absolute garbage. That's like 10+ years of gas alone (assuming you aren't driving trucks or huge commutes), and the hybrid still burns gas too. So it may take 20+ years to pay off. Then factor in time value of money and it will never pay off.

I think the only thing that makes sense is if you can get a cheap EV and get free electricity. You still won't make it up on gas but maybe maintenance and repairs since EVs are a lot simpler machines. Hybrids are the opposite and will cost you MORE to maintain and repair. They are garbage.

Otherwise get like $15k and buy a few years old economy car. It will get 30+ mpg, and require very little repairs even well over 100k miles and last you 10+ years, and insure it for <$100/month. Plus it will still be worth a decent amount in 10 years, potentially half its value if you keep it in good condition.

>> No.54432738

frankly i'd avoid buying a car at all costs. the consumer is just being abused here. a car is nice and all but if you don't need one don't buy one, and especially not on credit. it's a raw deal that robs the middle class of their money, and many people don't have a choice in the matter because they need a car to get to work. either that or live in the city and pay exorbitant rent for the privelage of cultural enrichment.

Hybrid or tradgas. EVs are overpriced, underbuilt, the 'no gas' thing is barely a cost saver in most parts of the USA unless you already have the infrastructure in place for charging your own, like solar panels in arizona. There are tons of minor and major annoyances beyond range that >>54427769 covered fairly well. Add on top of that
>charging stations are inconsistently placed and often annoying to use, can require adapters, often require setting up accounts with whoever operates them
>if you get in basically any wreck the car is totaled because there is not currently a standard for damage control on EV batteries
>if you're doing it for environmental reasons you need to drive the car for 10-15 years for it to have a net environmental benefit over gasoline vehicles
>meanwhile the battery loses up to 25% of its total capacity within 7 years and up to 50% by 14, replacement is a $10,000+ service

Hydrogen won't be as economically viable as EV's for two reasons.
1. Storing it in a dense fashion requires expense kit (It is a tiny molecule that tends to leak out really easily and is volatile)

2. The round trip efficiency of using hydrogen is 32% using renewables and 40% using non renewables (the grid to wheel efficiency of EV's is 77%)

Nuclear energy will only make it cheaper to produce batteries and generate hydrogen, but due to inefficiency inherent to hydrogen batteries will win out. The only use case I can see for hydrogen is aviation since specific energy (energy per unit of weight) really does count when you're fighting gravity.

It might not be lithium battery that win out in the end because it's quite scarce, but already we're starting to see progress made in Sodium Ion battery's specific energy and cycle life being increased.

Tl;Dr: electrics beat hydrogen on any timescale because they're that much more efficient.
