Anon... you have no idea what you're talking about. This is my last attempt to reason with you. Volatility decay depends on timeframe selected.
Lets say I hold an apple. It's worth $1 now tomorrow it happens to be worth 90 cents so in the daily time frame I've now suffered a loss of 10%. Now I need a gain of 10 cents which is an 11.1% move to make this back up. Now lets say that by the third day this happens so I'm now back to a dollar. Now however if I had only earned a gain of 10% that would have lost me a penny.

Now let's look at this same example from a 2 day timeframe. If we look at the first example with a 10% loss followed by a 11.1% gain we suffer no loss. We just break even at 0%.
And in the second example we suffer a 1% loss when looking at a 2 day span.

What the price happened to be within the timeframe does not matter it only matters what the price is from time frame to time frame. In the first example it's days. In the second it's 2 days. Now with stocks or apples you can choose what time frame. But for leveraged ETFs with leverage greater than 1 they use cash swaps to achieve this. Basically they make a bet with a creditor and if the underlying goes up they get payed out 2 times the move and if it goes down they get payed out 2x the loss. Now this occurs daily for funds that are rebalanced daily, so this is the timeframe that you must use when examining volatility decay.

If you don't get this post I'm just going to call you a nigger and move on with my life.

However you slice it, I had one ETF which is the inverse of the other, so one can essentially consider the other to be somewhat an underlying asset. There is a specific point in which I "jump in" to the action, and one can more or less theorize that from that point, one direction is to my favor, and the other is not. As the underlying asset moves up and down, it passes my original jump in point. Again, theoretically, any movement towards the "good side" of that point should be green for me, yet over time, as the underlying asset swings up and down, my point of green adjusts slightly lower and lower.

No matter what you call that, no matter what all else is what, that occurs. Why? I do not know, I am not capable of more than very rudimentary maths and am disinclined to overly concern myself with details beyond the practically required, as I have already used up assuredly more than half of my lifetime and on top of that, my mental capabilities are even less now than they were within my twenties, thirty years ago, in many ways. Yet one can also say that there is a certain degree of higher intelligence/wisdom in knowing only that which one most needs to know in order to carry out one's desired tasks, or even handle tasks which present themselves against one's desire.

At any rate, this shit which I have just described, does your big sharp brain full of knowing have any idea what it's called if not volatility decay, being a decay in one's desired value over time while being acted upon by volatility? Surely you must also realize the irony of threatening to refer to someone else as a nigger while behaving as one does.

Again either read to figure out what a leveraged ETF is or don't. The underlying is the original asset. In the case of SOXL/SOXS it was SOXX (it's slightly different but beside the point of this post.) BOIL and KOLD both share the same underlying asset. The Ultra Bloomberg Nat Gas Subindex. Like I said you need to go read and understand what you're investing in. I've tried to explain this in terms that a 8th grader could understand with my apple scenario for you. Supply and demand for shares. It's really that simple.

It's easy to assume that an ETF is worth exactly what it's worth, but in practice that's not actually true. There are procedures to create and remove shares, and market makers buying/selling within an acceptable range in order to profit off situations where the ETF gets oversold or overbought relative to it's fair value (NAV).

You're mostly noticing this effect to the downside, so you see it as decay. Swing traders are selling the pops in leveraged ETFs, so the wins are never quite as big as they seem like they should be.

Read the prospectus it's possible but I'd imagine unlikely Usually the swaps are provided by megabanks like Goldmann Sachs so if that's what causes the fund to go tits up you've probably got bigger issues. A leveraged fund is not the underlying asset and has unique risks and benefits associated with it. When in doubt read the prospectus.

>> No.54316179

>>54316129
Lets say the ETF is worth $10. This is it's real value. You could buy a block of 50k shares and contact the fund and cash those shares out. But most people don't have that kind of scale or approval to submit these transactions themselves, so MMs do it.

In the morning, day traders jump in and race to buy the ETF because they see an uptrending futures curve and they're hyped. Someone has to have shares to trade with them. They're not willing to accept just $10. It spikes a little to $10.10. If it's really extreme, new shares get created to profit off the divergence.
In the afternoon, they want to close it to avoid overnight risks, rebalancing higher into a decline. All these traders are slowly closing out their trades. The commodity hasn't moved. Fair value as of that day is theoretically still $10, but there is no one that want's to buy. Some MM calculates a profitable arb with an acceptable risk and takes those shares off their hands for $9.90, cashing out at par and removing the shares from circulation.

The commodity hasn't moved, but the ETF has declined 2%. Now, in theory, if the commodity settled flat and reopened the next day flat, there should be no rebalancing costs, no volatility decay, and it reopens next morning at $10 or maybe $10.10 if there's still hype.
In practice, there is almost always some morning gap up/down, and then it frequently slides a bit from there.

Hmmm. Yes, I just always assumed that the gaps up and down at open are due to the changes in the underlying asset (nat gas futures for BOIL) while the markets were closed, but if the price of the ETF fluctuates with the supply/demand of the ETF, then the ETF isn't actually based on the underlying asset.

That's because you are far more uninformed than even myself. If you think a leveraged ETF works as simply as buying and holding until line go up someday then why don't you just go ahead and all in, then get back to me in Jan 2024 when the natural gas contracts have contangoed the rug out from under you on top of the ETF rolling/chopping/decays/etc. Maybe it will work out by some retard miracle, but none of the actual data supports it. Microsoft google and meta will be eaten by apple or tesla. Apple makes HARDWARE, tesla has the backing of the p*ypal mafia. Tiktok is the search and advertising of the future. Google and microsoft are banking on AI but their underlying platforms are outdated to people under 25. Baby boomers adopted google as a digital "whitepages", SEO link building campaigns and private blog networks are outdated to zoomers and aoomers. Millenials dont react to tiktok advertising like they did with web2 platforms, youtube, facebook, exc. Gen X and millenials with small business ownership will hire zoomers/aoomers to do some tiktok dances and edit it with text themselves. Windows will lose marketshare to apple, professionals will keep using mac os, rich nerds and poor nerds will stick to gentoo and linux shit, government contractors will give in to apple. The only non apple computer makers left will be niche shit like framework laptops or system76 since thats always a dedicated nerd money farm. Google will lose advertising power, their android division will only save them so far until tesla makes some tesla phone, musk will buy out android like he did with twitter. Meta cannot scale out on future computer hardware like apple, its not 2003 anymore. NVDA and surviving chip makers with a strong presence in AI will be be bought out by tesla or apple, they have the money and end user hardware presence to need chips. /g/ will continue to be angry about apple or elon musk but they were wrong about bitcoin just like they flip out over monero threads now. /g/ is zerohedge for computer nerds. Peter theil and silicon valley will always back tesla and top wall street execs under buffett will never dump their apple shares for its dividend machine.

Morgan Stanley/E*TRADE has an incredible wealth of insightful information available for trading strategization.

"Whether the energy sector escapes from its doldrums will likely depend on whether oil can break out of its own range. In recent weeks, Morgan Stanley & Co. analysts upped their 2023 demand forecast for oil (citing momentum in China’s reopening, among other factors), but tempered that potentially bullish scenario because of higher-than-expected supplies from Russia.1 The net result was a roughly 10% downward revision of their previous price target for Brent crude oil (the European/global price benchmark, currently trading at a $5–$6 premium to WTI crude) in the second half of the year, from $100–$110 to $90–$100."

I disagree. MSFT is run by shareholders with a wall street mindset. Larger holders of microsoft are more sensitive to stock pricing and dividend distribution. The windows stack needs AI to deliver some growing cash flow results on its search functions or it looks bad to the companies investments. Large firms move the ship with microsoft and little guy holders are conservative investors. Tesla shareholders from bottom to top are gambler loyalist moonboys at the bottom to move fast and break things tech whales at the top. Tiktok and china eating away at googles advertising machine for a few quarters on end could be the start of a disease for microsoft that their AI attempts cant cure. Look at how dotcom movers and shakers leveraged crypto into its own advertising system while big legacy companies are slower to adopt. Small money big money always chases the fastest moving car. Tesla is building a moat around automobiles while legacy competitors like ford cant catch up.
