that depends on how things go in the near term. If the markets crash hard and funding goes with it, explorers will get hurt, producers will take a hit in that situation as well. In my schizo opinion this will pass over after they use their small hat media magic and then we'll get a cyber attack to keep the velocity down, like covid after the repo market collapsed in Sept 19. They'll need to curate the flow of money somehow so exporting those dollars via warfare is probably still on the table since it's the tried and true method since the first money was laid out with rollers in ancient china

Not sure about investors, but in 08 when credit disappeared it showed back up just a couple years later. Of course in those couple years most small businesses went bankrupt.

The recent covid crash they avoided that because Trump promptly handed out trillions in loans that were basically just grants to small biz. A shitload of them still went under, but not nearly as many as in 08-11 I don't think.

every time that happens the US gets closer to socialism, but I can't really complain because the 08 crash was brutal for everyone including miners.

>> No.54237741

>>54237641
For reference, I think a small business in mining in the US is currently anything under $21 million per year in revenue and fewer than 100 employees. Meaning a lot of the junior miners discussed here are small businesses by US standards. Those juniors are particularly vulnerable to recessions and tightening credit. A good market crash will wipe a lot of them out. Time will tell, but bank failures spreading is a dark shadow atm.

>> No.54237870

>>54237741
i am honestly expecting a lot of the tiny juniors to get killed off shortly, simply because most investment is focused on established, popular projects. Little guys still working on their big hit will loose out to projects that already have an established history of success. It sucks but thats how the market works.

>> No.54237994

>>54237870
Yeah it does suck.
Just based on what you've posted over the years and what I've seen on the websites of miners there, I get the feeling your area is an incredible gem that's going to blow up sooner or later. You guys are sitting on ground that makes me drool and I've seen a lot of good ore over the years. I get the feeling the weather and remote locations are all that's really holding you back on a lot of projects. That won't last, that place is going to boom up big one day.

I'm heading to bed but I brought an interesting rock for show and tell. Found this last week on an old mine.
It's the usual ore from my area. Small crystal galena. They said the smaller the crystals, the more silver it had. Some of this stuff ran over 20,000 toz/ton silver, though most of it is about half that. It's not our richest silver ore, that was almost pure silver. But this is the crap that filled the mills and kept the town in business. I picked up a few pounds laying on the ground. Presumably several hundred dollars worth of silver though I'd have to smelt it to know for sure. They left piles of this stuff on some of the dumps when the mines closed down. This is the reason they're building a new mill here. Millions of dollars worth of silver just littering the hillsides and gulches. It's worth building a mill just to process what's laying around.

>> No.54238258

>>54238131
The smelters here in town used to just toss this stuff into the furnace by the ton because it melts at low temperatures into almost pure silver/lead.

We used to also sell it to smelters all over the world for use as a flux for acidic refractory ores. It turns to liquid and drips through the furnace charge alloying and dissolving other metals as it percolated down. Fabulously rich rock, it made a few fortunes back in the day.

Tempting.

The stuff runs almost half silver on average, and there's tons of it sitting around. One person with a pickup truck could pretty easily make a million dollars in a couple days just rolling rocks into the back of their truck.

But smelting and refining a literal ton of stolen silver isn't an easy task. The lead and arsenic in that rock is easily enough to kill a small village.

Royalty companies would still be much safer to hold than most other mining companies if liquidity dries up. These are well diversified companies often with many lowest cost quartile mines in either production or development in their royalty portfolio. Those kinds of projects get financed more readily even if money is tight. Of course everything would suffer in a liquidity crisis that goes without saying. But then again the lowest risk royalty co's (Franco Nevada and WPM) are not only totally debt free but also well endowed with cash, so they could even use a liquidity crisis to their advantage by financing project development for even more royalty share

That's an interesting thought. Might happen yeah. Although if any good ones pop up they might be eaten up by bigger royalty companies shortly afterwards. Just in the past year two fairly big royalty companies were acquired: Maverix Metals was taken over by Triple Flag; and Nomad Royalty by Sandstorm Gold. Furthermore the current royalty players are hard at work trying to generate new royalties and streams independently as well. There are a few small ones already out there like Empress Royalty and Electric Royalties too

I was just eyeing some of the higher quality developers again and I noticed the Skeena seems to be on sale. I said recently that I'm not too keen on development projects right now but I might be inclined to put a thousand or two CAD into Skeena and just let it sit until they start producing in 2026/2027. There is a risk they won't get their permits on time or that they will be denied, but the project is so high quality that the risk may be worth taking at these prices. They will likely have to raise capital sometime this year too though. Have they said anything about a buy out recently? Skeena's Eskay Creek is incredible, but they had that issue last year with the tailings dump getting lost in a court battle to an overstaker. They have a lot of support from the local first nations, their open pit plan is pretty solid, the only real issue i can recall was the mercury counts in their ore are rather high compared to a lot of other regional mines, and the gov wanted more planning on that front.

So First Majestic spends a lot of money buying a mine, loses a lot of money running it for a while and then shuts it down. Amazing. The huge drop in SP today is probably more loss of confidence in leadership than the mine shutting down because it was such high cost that you kinda had to expect it happening.

Ahh yea i ve brought them up a few times, Nickel Mountain is a remote property (even for the Golden Triangle) that has serious potential for a nickel mine, but its too far away from infrastructure and too high on the mountain to be really workable at the moment. Around the base of the mountain, and off to the Northwest on the property are a number of high grade gold silver targets that are in Epithermal quartz, which are far more tasty targets for Garibaldi right now. I ll see if there is any news on their Nickel Mountain project, they have been drilling holes in that mountain peak for years.

Be careful with that project, Nickel Mountain's bankrupted a few companies over the years.

They're slowly getting closer to fairer valuations I think. But that's only because they keep losing money kek. Royalty companies, majors and some of the better gold juniors/midcaps are in a decent place valuation wise though. Maybe I'll even buy some silver-focused company in a few months if the markets take a massive enough dump. Although at that point I'll probably be much more interested in discount sale majors. Sure the further they fall the closer they get to a fair valuation. But most are still far off I think. Many silver miners just lose money consistently and if profitable it's slim. Clearly it is that way because investors think silver is going to $100. I am bullish on silver as it can't really go lower due to production cost, but I don't think it's going that high and even if it does I think it will be for a short while.
Gold majors are valued pretty highly imo, although I still think most will be a good investment as I'm bullish gold. But take Agnico Eagle, I would love to buy some, but it's trading a P/E of 30 right now. That's crazy for a miner that depletes its reserves every year. Miners should generally trade at lower P/Es than say Coca Cola that doesn't deplete anything, they will just keep making money. Their brand may even get more valuable over time. But Coca Cola is trading at 27.5 P/E.

Good points. I've purposefully avoided silver miners for the exact reason that they are already pricing in lofty silver prices. I agree that those companies still have much more room to the downside. Big expectations are baked into those share prices. As for gold companies, perhaps I have been more focused on royalty companies because those seem valued pretty nicely to me. They don't have the same high capital expenditures as miners so 30x P/E is fine. Franco Nevada gets a bit of a premium because it's so well diversified and low risk in the long term. But then you have Sandstorm which is trading at about 16-17x P/E probably because market didn't like their recent dilutions (however: while they diluted by about 55% Y/Y, their earnings went up by 95% Y/Y and they added a lot of good growth and income to their portfolio). But even with the majors: B2Gold, Newcrest, Yamana, Gold Fields, Zijin and First Quantum are all trading either just above 20x or closer to 15x P/E at the moment.

Some of the junior or midtier producers are trading near or below 10x: Jaguar, SSR Mining, Calibre, Sibanye-Stillwater. On the developer/explorer side, the higher quality companies are trading at a third or a half lower than what they were two years ago.

Still, I do agree with you that there definitely is room to the downside as well. But with P/E we should be careful as they indicate past earnings, which have been on the lower side last year when gold slumped a bit, making lower lows than in 2021. Coca-cola's bottom line doesn't swing violently in response to commodity prices.

Wheaton has a P/E of 32 and Franco 40. That seems high to me because what are the mine lives of their streams and royalties? if you pay 30x earnings for 20 years of earnings, that is a pretty bad deal. I haven't really looked much into these companies, there may be some growth priced in but still I have a hard time seeing how a stock like that is going to give you a great return. Also if gold price will do well it will be harder for these companies to do deals as miners will be flushed with cash.
Don't know about Sandstorm, but I assume their royalties have shorter life span too.
Yeah there are other gold miners that are way cheaper than Agnico, but many of those also have shorter mine lives. B2Gold seems to have competent mgmt, but price isn't exactly cheap with their short mine lives. They seem to be confident that they can expand reserves massively in Mali as they are talking about mill expansions even though their current mine life is actually pretty low. But I dno.
I also think earnings are going higher as I'm bullish gold. But I feel like I should be able to buy the companies priced for current gold price.

>Wheaton has a P/E of 32 and Franco 40. That seems high to me because what are the mine lives of their streams and royalties?
Varying. Some are long life assets, some aren't. But any decrease in royalty revenue is displaced by new mines coming online. Both companies have a steady growth pipeline as well as a history of steady revenue growth
>Also if gold price will do well it will be harder for these companies to do deals as miners will be flushed with cash.
They will benefit from increased revenues via their current royalties, and a higher gold price would incentivize mine expansions and new mines being developed. Franco Nevada has I think over 400 royalties and streams, most of which are exploration and development projects. Many of these royalty deals have been made during cyclical sector lows. New royalty acquisitions also keep being made even when the sector is booming, because developers are happy to trade away a royalty or a stream for a couple dozen million bucks of non-dilutative financing. Both WPM and FNV by the way have boatloads of cash and zero debt as well. I'd say royalty companies are fairly valued at 30x P/E for the aforementioned reasons.
>Don't know about Sandstorm, but I assume their royalties have shorter life span too.
I have to do more DD but they have over 200 royalties IIRC. And they have surprisingly many tier 1 assets in their portfolio thanks to recent acquisitions. Again, of course many of their royalties are short life assets but that's the beauty of royalty companies: new mines will come online to replace them. Sandstorm and Osisko Gold Royalties have impressive growth lining up in the next five years, and for no added cost. Remember: royalty companies' operating profit is their NET profit! I cannot recommend looking into royalty companies enough!
>But I feel like I should be able to buy the companies priced for current gold price.
I would love that too. Maybe a liquidity crisis this year could provide us that opportunity

I get it because I'm a treasure hunter and everyone else here is too. You got the desire to suddenly get fabulously wealthy without a lot of work. The idea that you've figured out a secret to getting rich that other people are too dumb or deluded or busy to see. Pretty normal desires and thoughts. Unfortunately people like us get scammed a lot. Usually by other people just like us. It's very hard to scam someone that isn't greedy and doesn't want to game the system.
To be fair it isn't always a scam, some people probably got unironically wealthy off BHS just like some people get rich off the lottery or by hunting lost gold mines. It happens sometimes or we wouldn't keep trying.

Largest nugget ever found in California
>According to Carrol Hayes, whose family purchased the Sierra Buttes Mine in 1904, miners on their way to work at the mine saw a portion of the nugget on the trail after rain had washed away the dirt that had been covering it. They quickly began unearthing the rest of the nugget and couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the “Monumental” chunk of gold

I'm green above .07 cents anon. Considering adding a few more bags to the pain trade. Very easy to DCA down with the price this low.

The exemption was revoked due to property lines away from the main deposits. The resulting FUD was way overblown. The mine still has 6mil+ oz of silver.

I've been doing some DD on the Osisko companies and damn so far they all look good. Osisko Gold Royalties has strong royalties and streams coming up; Osisko Metals is very cheaply valued considering they have a tier 1 zinc asset within two or three years of production; Osisko Development is developing Cariboo and Tintic with a view of getting into production for 2024 with 100koz/year and ramping up to 350-500koz/year as a midtier producer; O3 I haven't looked at yet but I sure have high expectations. So far I really like OR, OM and ODV. I already own some OR but I might be inclined to invest in OM given its valuation in relation to their Pine Point asset. OR also owns substantial royalties on all the other Osisko companies.

I've also done DD on Artemis and Skeena recently as you all might know and I like those two a lot. But today I also took a look at G Mining Ventures, which surprised me. It's a fresh junior that's heading to production next year with a very low cash cost (~$600/oz) gold project in Brazil. It's being built by people who have built large scale projects like Fruta del Norte. Eldorado and Franco Nevada own like 35% equity interest, and Osisko Gold Royalties also has a 0.75% royalty. It's an excellent project and I really like this company but maybe not the best timing to buy chart wise. It's up there with Artemis and Skeena in terms of quality although it is a smaller mine.

I will give a quick warning on Osisko Development, their Cariboo Gold Project is sitting on a massive pile of gold, but it may not yet be worth going after with current plans. When OD released their most recent development plan, a few different groups pointed out costs associated with each stage of development wouldnt pay for the next stage. They have the money to build stage one, but would need another massive injection of cash in 2-3 years to start up stage 2. I am also not sure if their plan to develop underground will work very well, due to stability issues and how water logged the ground below Jack of Clubs / Valley Zone is. The ore body geology is also going to be a bit tricky to actually mine at a steady grade, adding more of a headache.

Tintic is a better deal over all for Osisko, its ready to operate, it has incredible gold grades, and its in simple to work with ground.

Anyone looked at Commander Resources yet? I ve been watching them for a while though twitter but never noticed actually where their working. Its interesting territory east of Smithers, 70km from the past producing Bell copper mines on Babine Lake. Burn is a totally new discovery which is different for the region, usually someone had a look at a porphyry back in the 60s or 70s.

It's an extremely small market and regulated heavily by governments. Also governments are the only significant buyers. They basically set the price by contract.

any price action is just speculation on how much the governments will need vs. how much the handful of miners will produce. And how many suckers you can draw into the market on hype.

so there's no real basis for significant price movement, and suckers get burnt out on losing money so the price is cyclical as dumb money comes in and then exits and you have to wait a few years for new dumb money to show up.

give it time, it'll spike again for no real reason other than investors milking other investors.

If gold price is strong I think we could see $1/share in 12 months when the FS is out, assuming it is positive which I certainly expect. If they then choose to build it themselves this play could turn out to be a long term growth story building these small 100koz projects backed by the team at Sunvalley. The CEO talks about rolling up other similar projects and developing them quickly like with their current one.
>>54271127
I have looked into them in the past. They have a royalty on the hammerdown project that is very valuable compared to their tiny mkt cap. But their other projects aren't very exciting so I haven't bothered as I dont like nano caps as G&A is so high compared to cap.

Canagold is controlled by Sunvalley, a private fund operating profitable mines currently in Colombia. Hard to say how competent they are as they aren't public, but my general sense is that these private run mines are generally better run than those by small public companies. So I have faith in them, I also like what they have done so far, the plan to accelerate development, the capital raise done as a rights offering. Taking the proxy battle with previous mgmt shows initiate.
Flying out dore bars is completely normal for remote mines, how else would they send them to refiners? Even for mines that aren't remote I would actually guess that flying out the bars is standard to minimize risk. Cost isn't that high as gold is so valuable by weight.

yes! you can carry all sorts of stuff on those sorts of hovercraft, back in the day, hovercraft were used to move serious heavy equipment to the Snip Goldmine in the Golden Triangle, I ll see if i can find a photo of them, it was quite a common way to move material around back in the 80s.

Hovercrafts made travel a lot more workable up there, as they could maneuver over log jams and other obstacles that the wide river boats couldnt do. They fell out of fashion though and i am honestly not sure why, it was so much cheaper to move 4 or 5 sea cans and an excavator by hover craft than piece by piece with a helicopter.

Ah yes here is an update
https://www.independent.co.ug/ugandas-huge-gold-discoveries/

KEK. It's quite worth reading. I'll include some highlights here:
>After President Museveni made the pronouncement, there were murmurs in the local mining industry with some experts quietly saying it is possible the figures were perhaps misinterpreted or lost in translation considering that the analysis was perhaps done in Mandarin.
>Alex Kwatampora Binego, a mining engineering geologist who is also the current president of the Geological Society of Uganda told The Independent that he found the gold discovery figures given to President Museveni “weird.”
>Don Bwesigye Binyina, a mineral and energy policy analyst based at the African Centre for Energy and Mineral Policy in Kampala was also quick to tone down the excitement calling the discoveries anything but “mere fool’s gold.”
>Out of this figure, the U.S Geological Surveys notes 187,000 metric tonnes (205,000 tonnes) have so far been produced leaving a balance of just 57,000 metric tonnes (62,700 tonnes) of known reserves around the world. “This implies,” Binyina noted, “Uganda’s gold discoveries surpass global gold discoveries by 115.5 times.” “Did the President confuse ounces with tonnes?”
>They went on to point out that the world only produces around 3,000 metric tonnes of gold every year and 80-100 grammes of gold per tonne (gold ore). They referred to the Uganda government’s figures as “insane and extremely optimistic.”
>“If that discovery was authentic, you would have seen the big boys; the Ashantis, and Barrick Gold come into Uganda. Seeing the bigger companies here would mean that you have made it. Their silence perhaps implies that this is a red herring.”
