Straight up just work somewhere that has plc's. You can learn a lot on the internet, but hands on exposure is the best. Actual programming is boring as fuck and makes me want to claw my eyes out with a melon scooper. I've learned over the years to keep copies of old programs and shoehorn them into whatever I need. Think along the lines of converting relay logic for a waste water system into control logix. It's enough to make your ears bleed, but it's rewarding.

So yeah just start small, find a sawmill or a recycling plant. That would be a good mix of traditional "motor controls" experience and plc work. Just my opinion.

Carpenter wages are $65/hour ($110book rate), they also get healthcare, dentist, and a 2% per year annuity as well as retirement pensions after 25 years in the workforce. 40hr week make over $100k, and with travel OT most make $150k. Superintendents make over $300k with bonuses but work in high stress. Electricians and plumbers make less but not much less. You dont even want to know what elevator techs make. My best worker just retired at 45 and has a very comfortable lifestyle set up for the rest of his life, in a high COL city Chicago. But hes rare in that he ate healthy and not an alcoholic. His body is in good shape , although his hands resemble vice grips.

that's not really true anon. tradesmen are vital, well-respected and dignified people. everyone knows someone who is a tradesman whether it's a friend from school, a dad, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, etc. and many are intelligent and creative, especially those whose job requires a lot of problem solving and exposure to uncommon tasks and novel situations. with their mastery from years of honing technical skills and techniques, many tradesmen are architects, inventors, engineers, artists and artisans if they remain curious and optimistic in their life's pursuits and can often make for great conversations and have novel insights and comparisons from their field of expertise.
