I remembered you saying that having some averaging down liquidity was important, as is having a stomach for -40% swings. - On September 8 2020 nat gas had exact same price as today, BOIL was at $45

Commodities cycles are very brutal. Huge spike in commodity price usually results in lots of new production getting online which brings prices down significantly. Companies can operate at loss for years afterwards buring through cash they made during the upswing. Eventually competition dies and supply side shrinks as a result.
Check Uranium miners for example, plenty of them had huge boom going into 2000s, but around 2010s it all went to shit and since then almost all miners operate at loss. Some of them shut down some of their mines even.
Same goes for Silver. People are counting on Silver squeeze, but what they don't realize is that there are plenty of mines which are on hold because it's not profitable to mine right now (over > 50% of global production around 2019). The moment Silver price spikes up some of them get dusted off.
Not sure how it works with nat gas, I went into that one pretty blind with small part of my portfolio. Just trying to explain that commodities can get pretty wild at times and I blame trading them for my hair going white at the age of 35.

I hold CVX, MRO, and DTM to get a nice balance of oil, gas, and pipeline. MRO was a big mistake as I thought that was the one Buffett bought. My notes said OXY but I went full stupid and bought MRO. DTM is the only pipeline company I could find that wasn't an LP. CVX is because I like some of the other research stuff they do around biofuels. It's pretty much vaporware at this point but I hold out hope.
