It was a small apartment in a big city. I put down $20k my then-girlfriend and I had saved up.
After a while we got married and both of us made more money.
We had 2 kids so we needed more space and upgraded to house #2 with what we had saved again. This place we got for $450k and it was a nice detached 3br in the suburbs with a garden.
Rented the old place out a while so that rent payed off the mortgage
and sold for $550k a few years later.
After paying off the mortgage we had about $300k left so we upgraded again. This was in $2018 and we found a nice place for $1M that was way under market imo. House #3.
Bought it and rented out house #2 for enough rent to pay the mortgage (house #2 was a 15 year mortgage and should be payed off in 5 more years. The Zestimate is $650k and got up to $750k last May but I want to try to keep this place for passive income).
Currently living in house #3 with 4 kids. Don’t think we’ll need to upgrade again but we’re looking for a beach house and/or a ski cabin.
Financially, a house is just a store of value so that paying for a place to live every month isn’t just money down the drain.
