If a deduction in one of these ratios occurs, the bank must build its capital ratio back to the required level or risk being overtaken or shut down by regulators.

In general, these swaps involve two transactions. When a foreign central bank draws on its swap line with the Federal Reserve, the foreign central bank sells a specified amount of its currency to the Federal Reserve in exchange for dollars at the prevailing market exchange rate. The Federal Reserve holds the foreign currency in an account at the foreign central bank. The dollars that the Federal Reserve provides are deposited in an account that the foreign central bank maintains at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. At the same time, the Federal Reserve and the foreign central bank enter into a binding agreement for a second transaction that obligates the foreign central bank to buy back its currency on a specified future date at the same exchange rate. The second transaction unwinds the first. At the conclusion of the second transaction, the foreign central bank pays interest, at a market-based rate, to the Federal Reserve. Dollar liquidity swaps have maturities ranging from overnight to three months.

When the foreign central bank loans the dollars it obtains by drawing on its swap line to institutions in its jurisdiction, the dollars are transferred from the foreign central bank's account at the Federal Reserve to the account of the bank that the borrowing institution uses to clear its dollar transactions. The foreign central bank remains obligated to return the dollars to the Federal Reserve under the terms of the agreement, and the Federal Reserve is not a counterparty to the loan extended by the foreign central bank. The foreign central bank bears the credit risk associated with the loans it makes to institutions in its jurisdiction.

dont you trade your local currency reserves to the Fed though?

also why borrow dollars from the Fed, when you can just sell your local currency for dollars and use that? they're doing the same thing anyway with the swaps because it uses the prevailing market rate. at least if you just outright bought dollars, you wouldnt have to pay them back with interest to the Fed. whats the point of all this?

seems like they're just slushing money around for no good reason, unless they're trying to create the illusion of more liquidity but there's really not

Both parts of the swap are actually done in "virtual currency", not physical, even though the "assumption" is that it's no different from doing it on physical currency; so it's all leveraged in practice. In addition there are overnight interest rates on both pairs (anyone who dabbled in FX will understand this, I did once and wouldn't recommend, but it's important to get what's happening here). The difference in the rate is collectable on one side and is lost on the other.
Then as you hinted a swap has a direct impact on the pair's going rate.

I think this will cause DXY to go up, but not skyrocket. Remember this is only foreigners demanding dollars, not America (the biggest user of USD). There were similar issues during the pandemic where the Fed needed to make more swap lines available for USD, but that did not move the DXY for very long. Until America sees higher demand for dollars the DXY is likely to not budge much.

However, the way this looks to me, is that Jeff was right. The Eurodollar system is collapsing and there's nothing the Federal Reserve can do except inject an unlimited amount of dollars into international banks and financial firms. God knows how many of these banks will fail if they don't get dollars, and who knows how much they need. This could be the biggest bail out of all time.

AMRN - A case study in the perils of bio companies and giving big pharma the finger. In end part of 2019 AMRN was riding high. They'd passed the FDA approval hoop-fest. Everyone was giddy with glee with the thought of money flowing in like crack now they'd gotten approved. Which was an easy thing to do considering the drug helped aid the prevention of the Big One from happening to you. But alas Big Pharma with it's cash cow Lipotor had other ideas. It's no secret that once they (AMRN) got FDA approved the lawsuits came out. Challenging their patents on the drug. They told Big Pharma to suck it so out came the lawsuits. Which drained their coffers and kept them from marketing the drug effectively. The stock went from high mid 20s down to a shockingly low 1.50 today. As to why no one's bought them yet well now that the judge said the drug patent's are invalid big pharma is merely waiting for the company to die to pick the bones clean.

that doesn't make sense - if the USD was already sitting as reserves in these foreign central bank accounts, then they wouldnt need the swaps. they would just withdraw their existing USD reserves that are already in their possession

this seems like the Fed will be printing USD to loan out for these swaps

>We compute similar incentives for the sample of all U.S. banks. Even if only half of uninsured depositors decide to withdraw, almost 190 banks are at a potential risk of impairment to insured depositors, with potentially $300 billion of insured deposits at risk. If uninsured deposit withdrawals cause even small fire sales, substantially more banks are at risk. Overall, these calculations suggest that recent declines in bank asset values very significantly increased the fragility of the US banking system to uninsured depositor runs.

That's the thing little Bobo.... You are already scared, you sold, you hedged, you've been bearish for 3 years. My grandma knows about the recession. Markets move faster now. When everyone expects the worst, doesn't that get reflected in asset prices? People are also aware of the past, this isn't the 1970s, or 2000s, or 2008, it's people in the future who remember those events and what not to do.

EVERY Bobo is a doomer now. Every Twitter midwit, YouTube literally who, retarded redditor is bearish. They see negative macro events and think that must mean a crash is imminent, "how can mumu be so delusional? It's all manipulated!" . But didn't you already act on that news? Negative things happen all the time; geopolitical tensions, currency issues, companies fail, trade issues, frauds etc. It's just the first time you paid 24/7 attention to it. In fact, extreme bearish consensus/expectations actually buffer the market from going lower because things turn out to be nothing burgers.

If foreign currencies are inflated, thats deflationary for the USD, and vice versa. Currencies inflated and deflate when compared to one another, specifically the USD compared to the rest of the world, they dont just inflate and deflate together in tandem. Thats how the USD was able to achieve 1:1 parity with the Euro last year.
