here's what worked for me:
1. after working in the film industry for 2 years (Europe, so nothing glamorous or high paid desu, but a decent amount of projects), I (23) decided to transition to games... that's 2018
2. my country only has 1 bigger game dev company, the rest are indies, so I was like fuck it, if I have to I'll relocate to another country, as long as I break in... my focus was QA because it's the easiest
3. went to a faculty (management in IT) in 2018, immediately after quitting film
4. at the faculty, went to some game dev workshops; had 1 mini 2D platformer prototype from here
5. joined a Skyrim modding team that was working on a big project... I joined as QA and later became QA lead; had a pretty massive mod to show here, good reference
6. also joined one of the volunteer groups that worked on some game projects; got 1 mini RPG prototype from here
7. I was also learning about QA a lot
8. in Dec 2019, I saw that this company had a Junior QA role open, no experience required... applied, got the job, joined in Feb 2020
9. dropped out of the faculty in June 2020 because it's fucking useless, wanted to focus 200% on progressing within the company
10. worked hard to stand out from others at the company, managers started noticing it
11. after 1.5 years at the company, I applied for a product manager position internally
12. now leading projects, working on super creative stuff, and actually have a massive impact

honestly, I don't think you should make your own indie game and release it... too time consuming and you'd need to know way too much... join some online project that appears stable enough, work with others as a side hustle, and get some better references as a result (it's the lazy way, you then just have to sell yourself as a "self-starter") - portfolio = everything

Your best bet, in my opinion, is to just go indie and stay there. Thanks to platforms like gamejolt, itch.io, and steam greenlight and the Unreal Engine or Game Maker Studio it has never been easier to be an indie developer. If you can release a game for $2.99 and sell a couple hundred copies a month you will be well on your way to making ends meet while being in the "vidya industry" on your own terms instead of Microsoft's or EA's terms.
