Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL
START MINING IN P2POOL
>START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shut down/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't. It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. Once P2Pool reaches & maintains 51%+ of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

Although many inexperienced miners think that bigger pools give better profits, this is absolutely NOT the case. Your profits in the long run depend ONLY on your hashrate, NOT on the pool's hashrate.

>YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL FASTER & EASIER THAN EVER BEFORE WITH THE GUPAX GUI. USES TRUSTED REMOTE NODES BY DEFAULT!!!!

1. Download the *bundled* version of Gupax for your OS here: https://gupax.io/downloads/
2. Extract somewhere (Desktop, Documents, etc)
3. Launch Gupax
4. Input your Monero address in the [P2Pool] tab. USE A SEPARATE MINING-ONLY WALLET!
5. Select a Community Monero Node that you trust, although you can and should run your own node if possible.
6. Start P2Pool
7. Start XMRig

VIDEO GUIDE: https://gupax.io/guide/

You are now mining to your own instance of P2Pool, welcome to the world of decentralized peer-to-peer mining!

>NOTE THAT DUE TO BOTNET SHENANIGANS XMRIG IS AUTO-FLAGGED AS MALWARE BY MOST ANTI-VIRUSES, SO DON'T FREAK OUT!!!

START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
>START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
START RUNNING AN I2P NODE
>START RUNNING AN I2P NODE

>What is I2P?

I2P is an anonymized P2P overlay network akin to the Tor network but with several key advantages over it. I2P is now replacing Tor as the go-to darknet and will play a pivotal role in growing the Monerocentric economy.

>Why should I care? Why should I run a node?

Increasing shadow economy adoption and the proliferation of an XMR-only standard are what guarantee that XMR will have a floor and won't also crash to zero when the Crypto Casino finally implodes. XMR's long-term outlook is therefore *strongly* correlated with the darknet, you may have already noticed how the number of TXs begins to drop whenever the glowies attack & cripple the Tor network, which underscores just how critical it is that the darknet wins this war against the State. Make no mistake: if the darknet is allowed to die XMR will take a devastating hit as well.

So by running an I2P node you are helping to make the network Monero thrives in that much more robust while also enraging glowies in the process. Win-win!

>OK, but how difficult is it? Do I have to store GBs worth of data like when running an XMR node?

It is literally as easy as installing an Android app and no, there are no storage requirements, the node only consumes some bandwidth.

>Cool, I'm sold. What do?

If you have no interest in browsing the darknet yourself then the simplest solution is to install & run the I2Pd Android app on any compatible (Android 4.1+) device, ideally a TV box since they don't require recharging and are permanently online. But any old phone or tablet is fine too. Make sure you activate "start on boot" in the settings.

Otherwise just install the appropriate desktop client and leave it running.

https://github.com/PurpleI2P/i2pd/releases/latest

The console is accessed via http://127.0.0.1:7070/ or the menu in Android.

>No tail emission = Bitcoin is fucked

Right now, at the current hashrate, miners break even on energy expenses at a BTC price of $22K. Post 2024 halving, that break even point, at the current hashrate, goes up to $44K. If BTC does not go to $44K, miners will be unprofitable and hashrate will have to drop (miners going out of business) to reduce the cost of securing the network, also reducing the security.

If you know anything about the power of 2, you already know that things get very big, very fast. If we’re 3 halvings into 32 total halvings, then the estimated break even point for miners at current hashrate going into the last halving would be:

$22,000 * (2^27) = $2,952,790,016,000 per BTC

$2,952,790,016,000 per BTC * 21 Million total Bitcoin = $62,008,590,336,000,000,000 BTC Market Cap

The block rewards shrink so fast that after enough halvings Bitcoin would eventually require a $2.95 trillion price per Bitcoin and a $62 quintillion market cap to sustain the current cost of $7.15 billion/year.

Even if these numbers were somehow realistic, can you imagine securing a $62 quintillion market cap on only $7.15 billion/year of hashrate? LOL.

And that’s assuming energy costs do not increase at all over the next 120 years, which they will.

So basically BTC mining will eventually become so unprofitable the hashrate (network security) will shrivel up UNLESS it is subsidized by BTC transaction fees.

As a swiss bank account having billionaire, how much of your fortune would you stash in XMR right now? Be realistic.
For me, no more than a few percent. The only argument I have as to why, is the current hashrate. Every other "crypto" "currency" is a scam on some level, but I feel like Monero is still in a vulnerable phase regarding the cost of an attack.

Monerobros, I'm new to crypto and also fairly retarded. So I'll ask, I've been doing some research on banking and e-commerce and at one point there was a way to buy items off ebay with xmr, but it's not functioning now. There were some impressive vendors and shops made recently, but as of now inventory and volume is kind of smaller scale. Hot on the heels of Mercury Market from last week, here we go again, yet another Monero-only DNM has just launched, this time exclusive to I2P, making it unfathomably based. Say hello to Astra!!

I've lost count of how many Monero-only markets have launched over the past year, its easily 5 or more. The times they are a'changin' and deluded Bitfags will be the last ones to realize it hahahahaha

Anyway, really glad to be seeing DNMs exclusive to I2P starting to spring up, I2P is a better fit for hidden services for a variety of reasons so the more the merrier.

We're living in exciting times, gentlemen, there's definitely a buzz in the air........

No, you will not be successful swing trading between monero and centralized shitcoin stables. At best you'll match USD inflation while creating dozens and dozens of likely high value taxable events, when you COULD simply dollar cost average, likely outperforming the absolute bird brain idea of swing trading unbacked "stable" coins on centralized exchanges that have you by the balls, while creating precisely 0 taxable events and costing you practically no effort. It can even be automated, because all you're doing is buying on a regular schedule.

but hey what the fuck do I know, it's your money.

Any of you ever had an exchange through Majestic Bank take a long, long time?
Made the exchange almost (if not) 24 hours ago and still hasn't come through to my wallet.
It's a rather larger exchange and in my experience those do take longer so I'm sitting on it and seeing if it sorts itself out but I can't help but get anxious. If it's not through by the end of the weekend (should I make it sooner?) I will have to shoot them a Telegraph or whatever they use. I'd rather just let them do their thing though as they have always come through in the past.

Only thing is I didn't get the exchange ID, and the site was bugging out when I was trying to update the exchange page (any of you who use Majestic Bank a lot knows their website can be a bit quirky) so I only have the associated sending and receiving wallet I used for the exchange.

So yeah any anons had similar experiences or can give some advice on what to do?

Just SVB, at the moment, due to it being run by a bunch of completely incompetent diversity hires.
Since most people who use crypto are tourists that heard about it from Twitter and probably use CEXes, of which many projects had unsecured deposits in SVB, there's worry that some of these other projects are going to get FTXed, and by extension, the money people hold in them, from what I'm gathering.

Monerochads, question from a brainlet:
Is there any way to mine my own transaction? I've seen nodes(?) in countries I don't like so I was curious if it's a possibility.

>> No.54035317

>>54033929
Miners don't "mine" transactions per se. They find the solution to the RandomX algorithm which involves finding a hash that meets the difficulty target of the network.
Once your mining nodes find the right hash then it can select a set of transactions from the mempool, bundle them together into a block and propagate it to the network.
So yes, you can "mine" your own transaction, if you make a transaction and then somehow 2 minutes later your node is the one that finds the right hash to mine the next block, sure.
But I believe you're talking about broadcasting your own transaction using your own node. This is the default behavior if you're not using a remote node. Your node will communicate with other nodes in the network to make sure everyone is in the same version of the monero software, at the same block height, with the same mempool, etc. Because your node is your node you can certainly block IPs from connecting to it for whatever reason you want, but you censoring some nodes from countries you don't like won't do much really.

Necro reply, but the reason this isn't that big of an issue is XMR is the top performing CPU mining coin. Vulnerability to hash rate attacks only matters if you aren't the top coin or the coin is nearly dead. There's a theoretical attack on XMR via the Feds renting out AWS or something, however I don't think that's a realistic attack vector. Perhaps some other anons can help expand on that, I'm not too familiar with XMR game theory.

Ironically the greatest compute pool the feds have can't be used for Monero attacks because it's not connected to the Internet: classified AWS and Azure regions running airgapped on SIPR or similar networks. Regular AWS prohibits CPU miners in the ToS.

Yeah actually, because they have yuge penalty clauses in their AWS contracts and would end up paying a hojillion dollars in excess use fees. Unless 51%ing Monero was necessary to win a war or something it's got negative ROI for them.

MoneroMarket.io FTW! A week ago on it, I made my first ever sale of a physical item for crypto. I felt so proud! I also sold a few digital items there. It's actually quite more active than I thought. Definitely recommend you to put your stuff on sale there. Even the stuff you don't expect to sell quickly. It's an easy and direct way to contribute to the Monero economy.

Miners mine blocks to which transaction go. Transactions are broadcast (ideally) to all nodes so whoever mines a block will add those transactions into that block.
If you run your own node, it doesn't matter some other nodes are bad. Dandelion++ means the originator IP address of a transaction is not clear. And the details of the transaction itself are private of course.
If you don't don't run your own node but instead connect your wallet to remote nodes, then that node will know your IP. But that too can be solved by using remote nodes over an anonymity network like Tor or I2P.

The current banking uncertainty and looming financial crisis poses an excellent opportunity to increase XMR adoption, both within the current crypto ecosystem and in the broader population.
This is especially true given how eager maxipads have been to prostrate themselves before the establishment ( for proof, just look at their obsequious conduct toward Gary Gensler, Michael Saylor or any other establishment crony who looks their way).
I think the time is ripe to start truthfully showing Monero as the one true alternative to the system.
Do you agree?
What do you think is the best way to proceed?

>What do you think is the best way to proceed?
i think the best way to proceed is to just improve the tech behind monero.
i'm not really into the advertising thing, make it look like one of those scam mooncoins.
let the usefulness of monero speak for itself, i say. if an idea is good enough it will gain traction no matter what.

18.7 is 1/1'000'000 of the supply at the time of tail emissions. the amount is symbolic but still considered accurate. you would probably go for 20 anyway.

thanks based monerochad.

i was thinking, if monero get some kind of mass adoption and the price skyrocketed, lets say 50k, the tx price would be around 0.00003 xmr which would be $1.5
is this correct?

If I buy Monero from a KYC, let's say kraken, send it to a decoy wallet, then from the decoy to a real one, and then the cops came asking about it, and I just tell them my funds were stolen and as evidence I would show my empty decoy wallet, would that fly in court? (I'm speaking purely theoretically if monero is made illegal in the future)

well your decoy wallet would have the tx that you made to your real wallet registered. they would ask you who did you transfer your xmr to.
i think you are just overthinking this. send your xmr to your main wallet straight from the kyc. if they come knocking on your door (why would they?) just tell them you lost your keys or some shit. laws are not retroactive.

what if xmrchads used this hysteria to push taking XMR off the exchanges? I am using the term 'bankrun' but moreso a cex run. Itd be easy to correlate the two and get people to gtfo the exchanges. It's the perfect moment. Need to start the propaganda machine and strike while the iron is hot

>> No.54060869

>taking xmr off the exchanges
You mean removing the listings or just pushing people to self custody? There is not question that no one should hold any thing at all on an exchange, if people havent learned this lesson from the fallout of recent events they deserve to lose it all because it was never 'theirs' in the first place.

self custody
>if people havent learned this lesson from the fallout of recent events they deserve to lose it all because it was never 'theirs' in the first place.
this is a good opportunity to teach people to take their shit off the exchange. propagating the idea of self custody during this time will make those who ignored actually do it. CEX's obv cook the numbers for XMR so it would be interesting to see a mass run. when 1 CEX shares news of a shortage it will be over. That's all that's needed to start the dominos
the network is stronger with more people in self custody and could really fuck the exchanges that manipulate xmr

>> No.54061099

>>54060971
I dont disagree l, the idea of holding a privacy-centric currency on an exchange is absurd. Obviously i dont have any data on this, but i would think that the majority of people holding XMR, who understand its purpose, would also understand why self custody is absolutely necessary. Then again, maybe im being naïve.
