A theory is that a market collapse will reduce the value of assets being used as collateral.
If these assets go down in value, hedgies will no longer have sufficient collateral to keep their loans in play and so they'll get margin-called, causing them to lose a shit ton of money.
Shorts on gamestop would count as one of these loans. These shorts only remain open as long the lender confirms that the borrower has sufficient collateral to offset the value should shit go sideways.

The crash was coming for a long time, it finally happening means there's no more being able to pretend GME isn't grossly undervalued as a result of fraudulent and criminal activity. Short positions are margin positions. You have to have enough collateral to prevent margin calls. As interest rates on treasury bond increases the interest required to keep open the position rises accordingly. Once the system realize that collateral is no bueno (maybe because of bankrupcy, as Silvergate or Evergrande or Silicon Valley Bank) the company holding shorts is busted. Then their handler come into play, and they can either lend some money to keep the dance going (like Melvin at the beginning), internalise the position (like Credit Suisse and Archegos) or just let it rip.
