They can certainly process it, the problem is cost. I don't think you can go lower than $40-$50/t even with a big plant, so that's at least 0.75g/t just in processing cost. The deposit is like 1 g/t. Doesn't work. Have to be high grade for refractory to work.

S&P500 down almost 2%.
Gold up 1%
This is the danger of waiting on the sidelines for the crash. I also think we are going to see 3000, and usually gold would crash too, initially. But there is still a lot of liquidity in the system, I don't think they will drain it all before the recession is obv. There may still be liquidity seeking a safe haven.

Yeah, we are definitely in for a serious recession. The system can't handle 5% rates, and also the bottom half of consumers are tapped out. But as I understand it there is still a lot of money on the sidelines among the wealthier classes. So this liquidity could find its way to gold as things start to look grim. In 2008 I think the liquidity crunch was more severe and widespread (this was before CBs bought many trillions worth of assets).
Funny how the fed bought trillions worth of assets in months after the covid crash, and now they are "unwinding the balance sheet" at <$100B/month.

I'm mostly cash, shorting the market since two days ago with my only longs as nat gas for the inevitable regression to $4. I'll make money on one and double down on the other. If both go their separate ways I make mad cash or worst case scenario the market bounces and natty crashes to $1.50 which would suck but then I double down hard into both.

You know I'm starting to see in hindsight why investing in majors might not be too shabby. Most juniors and explorers are doing pretty poorly over the last year and more, whereas a bunch of the bigger dogs like Vale, Lundin, and Rio Tinto are flat or up, not accounting for the bonus dividends.

>> No.54006307

When you start looking at the percentages, the smaller lottery tickets are pretty much a scam 98% of the time.
And this is true all across the markets in all sectors.
If you invested into Cameco you did better than investing into Denison mines or Encore.
Putting your money into Shell or BP would have gotten better and steadier gains than going for some tiny oil company that may or may not do something.
It's much better idea to gain 30-50% a year from something steady than to try and make it from a junior that tanks and then goes sideways.
Of course it's easier said than done. Do I want to invest into some giga cap corporation? Fuck no, but in reality it's just more sensible than to gamble.

>> No.54006476

>>54006307
>It's much better idea to gain 30-50% a year from something steady
This is true but there's always going to be a certain desperation among younger investors that don't have a lot of starting capital and gamble on the small caps because anything less than a multibagger isn't going to help. It's sad that getting a job and slaving it out really is the only way forward for most, barring some string of luck. There's also the diversification thing where you want to spread yourself out to alleviate risk, but when you can only afford to put so much into each position then it hardly feels like a win even when you do get 2x on one spot. That's how I felt initially so I consolidated most of my positions into one or two of my "best" picks, but then timelines on those picks failed, and it was painful to stagnate while other lower tier companies that I had researched and watchlisted took off; now I've gone full circle and am back to ten or so positions with a few thousand in each.

I would think so yes. But sure if equities are in free fall, gold equities will probably get hit some as well. But it all depends on how gold is doing obv. If gold goes above 2000 and stays there I can't imagine gold equities are going to have a bad time. At that price mines are printing.

With regards to juniors I think they will be able to raise easily as well if gold is at 2000 even with a market crash. Also because I think overall liquidity is better today than in 2008. This isn't as much of a liquidity induced crash as it was back then, the consumer is just tapped out, demographics are a drag (in more than one way) and leverage is high + deglobalization. Lots of bad trends right now.

again, only if there is any free floating money out there to invest with. When the major crash happened last time, money dried up pretty much instantly. No one wanted to lend or invest in projects, this time around will probably be different.

And yes, the junk layer of junior mining will die off, it happens eventually anyway but a recession is a good house cleaner for bottom barrel explorers. It opens loads of ground up again which is never a bad thing.

I think development companies are good too. Ones with a solid resource already you can buy at $10-$20/oz. Could easily 5-10x with a juicy rally like in 2020. Even $100/oz is cheap if the project is realistically expected to have several hundred $/oz in profit margin.

Yeah there is always significant risk if they try to go ahead and build it themselves. But there is also huge potential upside with some of these companies.
Imagine buying a 1Moz developer at $20M. They run up to $100M as gold rallies, raise $75M in equity + debt to build the project. It is now producing 100koz per year making $40M/y in net profit at $400/oz profit margin, even more in FCF. You are in at $35M (adj for dilution). You are now making more than your initial investment every year in net profit (your share of the profit). Wow, amazing!

no problem! In the immediate aftermath the junior sector was slaughtered, it was a horrible time to try and find work in prospecting or exploration. Loads of well setup projects and properties were basically mothballed as no one had capital to finish up work. A little later on into 09-10 it wasnt as bad, but trying to get funding for new projects was nearly impossible.

actually I forgot to mention, the major reason for the utter demolition back than was it was at a point I think when a bunch of different companies / projects were expecting it to be fairly easy to find funding, spending was through the roof, so when suddenly everything shit the bed no one had anything saved up and projects got shuttered. I could be wrong though its been a while, I remember seeing the ACME Lab in my town go from a staff of 21 to 2 in a week thanks to 08.

Downside with them is that mine life is short and I'm not quite sure what cost is going to be in the upcoming years, could go up some. I'm a huge fan of Freeport as you know from my past bobposts. Reason is in 2008 they asked me to bid on a little bit of work at the Climax Mine. I sent in my proposal for $55k, it was a small job. Purchasing agent calls me up and says he likes the proposal but I need to double my price. I'm like, "sure, I can do that." So I enter a new proposal for $100k and change for the same job. They accept the proposal and immediately tack on a million dollars more of the same work at the rate I bid. Then they tell me I need new, full size trucks for everyone I send up there. 4 wheel drive. I said I don't have those, so they told me to add the price of purchasing new trucks to the contract. So they bought me a small fleet of new trucks. In the end we wound up working for them for 5 years, and they recommended us to 4 other mining companies for similar work.

I've worked for a lot of companies. Most of them. Freeport is always going to be my favorite for how much money they throw around, and how they do business. Absolutely awesome company, a pleasure to work with. Glad to see them poking around in your neighborhood. They do serious business.
