the RMs were overpriced but i needed them short-notice as a gift. i will be more careful with premiums in the future, but that sov the guy in the other thread shilled with the negative premium was a good deal. i kinda just wanted one windmill, i'm happy to stack big bars from here out.

I paid so much premium for some 2RMs that it's kinda embarrassing and I've excluded it from my PMs spreadsheet, justifying it as a numismatic purchase. I'm pretty sure I can sell/gift them to my friends to recoup some money but whatever. Also thanks for reminding me about the sov deal I was going to repost it here.

HERE'S A MAJOR DEAL FOR ALL YOU TARDS THAT ARE FENCESITTING ON GOLD/GOLD COINS/SOVEREIGNS

Gold sovereign (albeit modern) for 10% OFF at a price of $444.05. THAT'S A WHOPPING PREMIUM OF 3.65%!
If you've never used it before this seller also has a promo code "LIBERTYCOIN20" which lets you take another $20 off. That brings you to $424.05 which according to my calculations is:

1% below spot
>1% below spot
1% below spot

BRAND NEW SOVEREIGN FOR UNDER SPOT! They also sell regular sovereigns if you don't want the lizard on there but they don't have the 10% off deal for the others

ALSO

another anon pointed out in prev thread that the South African 2 Rand was on sale as well. 2 Rand coins typically have lower premiums than sovereigns despite being the same size and weight. If you use the promo code along with the 11% off discount the seller gives you you can get a 2 Rand for

4.25% under spot
>4.25% UNDER SPOT
4.25% under spot

a coin that is the exact size and weight as a sovereign (though not technically a british sovereign) for 4.25% under melt value.

Grains are an unusual unit, though perfectly valid. The 371 grains is actual silver content weight though, not overall weight, which is 413 gr.
And no the troy ounce (480 gr) or simple fractions or multiples thereof are the norm. If you get sterling rounds, they will usually make those weigh more overall to attain the 1-ozt (or more) ASW standard.

Jokes aside why would you quit? And if you do sell, right now it seems better to sell gold, because silver's premiums are so much higher but you don't really get as much back. Gold almost never sells above spot but you pay so little over spot anyway.

Silver and gold are definitely comfier holds, but even when shit is bad, there are likely a few things doing well. Managing a stock portfolio takes a lot of time and work, and with all the fuckery afoot these days, people stand to lose a lot if they don't actively stay in the know with good info. I had a 401(k) from a prior job I forgot about and never managed it or moved it. It pained me to revisit it recently and see that it was down $7k. I didn't use to know anything about finance. I've since corralled my old 401(k)s into an IRA. I have the cash just sitting there now while I plan my where to invest it.

Nice fren. I get stonks from work, when I started I was due to get about $400k. Market collapsed and now i'm due $100k. I mean still good, in fact great to be fair, but nothing like what I was promised. I don't really like showing off, it's not the thing we do here but i've got about half that already from my own portfolio and stocks from when I got laid off at my last company and they basically threw money and stocks at me to take redundancy voluntarily along with a years worth of pay. I invested heavily in the markets, but I can't say i've done well. If I sold up today I stand to lose about $10k on the money invested. But the metals are doing well. I think i'm pretty well clued up but my investments didn't do so great over the last 2 years so i'm left holding the bag. Seriously though, good for you. I admire someone who comes here with a good portfolio. A few months ago, I was mainly in the green but ETFs fucked me over big time. Especially Vanguard.

Don't beat yourself up over this. Look at the the last 5 years of pretty much every stock and it's nutty how inflated everyone's value was in 2020 and then just nosed dived. I knew that 2020 pump was all fake and gay though, so I sold everything I could at the peaks that year. I think 2023 will continue to be a tough year, but there will be another bull market, so keep staying abreast of all this stuff. Until then, I'm focusing on saving cash (to invest when the time is right) and stacking gold and silver. I'm also into bitcoin and monero, but I don't talk about those here, and they aren't my primary positions.

If I buy 10 rounds, it's just $10. You can look at that as 1/2-1/3 ounce of silver lost, but in that time I contemplate buying while it's in the cart, or hour looking around for cheaper, the price can go up another $1 and I've just spend $14 in wagie time. Unless you're filling a vault, you did fine. There will always be times it's cheaper and more expensive. You'll think you got lucky paying $29 a few years down the road. I appreciate your concern but rest assured that I'm hip to the flipping game. The Mary Engelbreit brooch isn't worth much (on eBay anyway), one sold for $11 + shipping which doesn't excite me. Those Dutch pewter pitchers/ewers are common, made in that style by various different firms in many different sizes. The aesthetic may be MCM but they're not that old. I have a good number of them in the pewter hoard and they almost always have problems like dents or unsightly scratches/scuffing.

That's good. I think I just get paranoid because I've seen people melt some very valuable shit. I buy out of my coin shop's scrap bucket and I've turned several hundred on something that may have melted for $30. It especially pains me if something is artesian by niche designer with few products of the market, or something historical like a Victorian brooch. I pull my scalp hairs watching "flipping" shows where people will destroy designer teak furniture at swapmeets by painting them teal and gluing mirrors. "We made $300 on this dresser we paid $20 for, how great!" >it's $3,000 if you just stained it and called it a day.

Hell yeah, I'm glad other anons do this, I get called a liar when I talk about the at-spot coin deals and sterling items available at my dad's favorite LCS. I advise him on the sterling stuff as things like fancy sterling tea balls, vestas (match holders) and the like are worth bank so he buys and holds for me the stuff I want. Believe it or not they put rusty or dirty but otherwise nice Morgan and Peace dollars and circulated German silver among other cool foreign coins in the scrap bin so I've had him collect for me a handful of 2 and 5RM windmills and pre-WW1 marks priced at exactly melt, seeing anons squabble about how much of a premium they pay for them on eBay amuses me.

Great finds. I actually had a David Andersen in mind when I was posting. I bought a necklace pendant for $3?ish in scrap silver and it's worth $300+. Those Nordic enamel pieces have a following. Luckily the shops I've been to are wiser (usually) when it comes to melting coins. They only melt coins where the details are completely worn to the point you can't even see the date. Even horrible scrap coins with no value numismatically sell well here simply because they're American and cheap enough for the newbies that walk through the door. I did get an Islamic coin out of the scrap bin for $19 that was valued at $125 at the time. I think it's $300 now. One of the coolest coins I've seen. Very clear Arabic, which is rare in this particular coin, can read the date and mint easily... just threw a 370+ year old coin away. I had so many Islamic collectors tell me they were envious of that coin and would like it if they could afford it. Some of these pieces have quite a history. Hard to see what gets trashed.

Luv me some sterling guilloche jewelry and silverware, it definitely has a strong following but still feels like a hidden gem category, not many people know about or have ever even seen that sort of stuff before. Well I first started out as a generic coin collector, basic circulation coins from foreign countries, things like that. Then I moved on to Morgan dollars a few years back, which were something new to me because all the coins that I'd been collecting prior were generic base metals. The Morgan dollars were like 20x the value of whatever shit I had tossed together. This led me down the silver pipeline; early on I bought a shit ton of constitutional silver from a LCS next town over. He sold bundles of junk in packs that he claimed weren't cherrypicked. Of the pack were walkers, mercs, barber dimes/quarters, a few common commems like Booker T. and Columbian halves. For a while my collection was mainly silver coins. Then like two or three years ago, forgot where it was but it was probably here DESU, someone convinced me into getting a sov. Which was crazy for me at the time because the sheer value of the gold made it more valuable than any other coin I had. It was really mind blowing how such a tiny yellow coin could be worth so much just because of the metal. FFW to today where I have (somewhat what you've seen pictured) a dozen assorted LMU/Sov coins, a generous heap of silver, and the Engelhard bar which was a gift from my grandmother God bless her. I believe it's from the early 80s based on the serial numbers and logo.

What should I do to prepare, besides memorizing the few junk coins that exist in my area? What are the best tells to identify random silver coins?
Milk spots would be an obvious sign, but those don’t really exist on old, circuited coins. The oxidation/ patina? Silver strikes me as a bit different to what I remember from our old silver colored coins. Don’t have anything to compare, thanks to the bimetallic € coins.

This was me one year back. I used to invest heavily into mutual funds. Pure gold is easily marred, losing numismatic value quite easily. Old Euro stuff is already there and being an alloy makes them more resistant to begin with. Their lower cost (being fractional) makes it easier to DCA for the budget-conscious stacker too. And it's kind of cool, connecting to the past (if they're not restrikes).

£10k in one transaction or in a year. I try to diversify it over several merchants but one in particular tends to be better than the others on price so I spent too much with them. Had to fork over passport and proof of address in the form of a recent bill. Not too worried. Of course I can buy metals in cash but then they start being funny with you when you walk into le coin shop with 100s in notes. Had one flat out refuse to sell me metal because I wanted to pay £2k in cash notes. I really don't think it's an issue, they can track every purchase you make with either a debit or credit card and well im giving them my name and address each time I order anyway. I don't know your laws, but essentially anon (and no offence here) they're based on ours. A seller is within his rights to refuse service to anyone for any reason. The particular LCS in question was just a cunt if im honest. He probably saw me in my shitty 2010 VW and my shitty clothes and thought I was some kind of criminal or something. I've only experienced that in one place, which I don't frequent any more. I used to walk into baird mint in London when I worked in the city in my suit and nobody ever questioned me paying in cash for gold bars. Not once. But stroll up to your local "mom and pop" shop looking like a degenerate and paying in wads of cash and they think you're a drug dealer or something. Like dealers would be buying metals kek.

my house alone attracts this. Fucking cunts. I'll probably put my house and assets into a business and make my kids directors of that company before I kick it. There are ways around the system here at least.
