Mexico is fairly safe even Mexico City as long as you stick to the touristy areas and don’t walk at night. If you’re with locals you’ll probably be fine too just don’t act like a flashy white boy and they’ll probably leave you and your girl alone just look poor and unimportant.

CDMX is nice bro, you'll be fine. I spent a week there at the JW Marriott in Polanco. Just stick to that particular area/tourist areas and you'll be fine. If you want to live on the edge you can take a bike tour from one of the people near the Zocalo and weave in and out of traffic. That was fun

Central Mexico is great, you should go. Check out Teotihuacan while you're there, it's only 45 minutes from the MX airport. Amazing place and the little towns nearby are nice and have some great food. It's not particularly dangerous even for gringos.

Mexico is amazing, people are great and the food is excellent. By all means go. Also learn the language. Spanish is a very useful language to learn, it opens the whole South of the continent for you, and the top tourist destination in Europe too.
