To clarify, if I need the money within a typical month I keep it in checking because that's the minimal effort solution. For me that fluctuates around $5k deposited. I use Charles Schwab which conveniently yields more than zero right now. Current yield of 0.45%, however in context that's pretty irrelevant - like $25/year max.
Then I also roll some money in a short-term treasury ladder that's spread over 6 months. This is for any larger planned expenses like buying a car, or if the stock market ever collapses hard.
Then any excess sits in the default sweep on my other brokerage which is a money market, however most of the time I'm fully invested.

Unfortunately Charles Schwab makes it impossible to swap their own cash sweep to something with actual yield, so I primarily just use them as a bank and a side portfolio of a few longer term legacy stock holdings.
I'm always open to improvement though if you have any better ideas.
