I welded for four years. The real downside is the managers of trade companies both large scale and mom and pop. Overwhelmingly incompetent and disagreeable. I had a boss who literally wrote nothing down and then would pass on the welding job via fucking oral tradition, when he forgot to tell you something he would blame you as if he had. Worked at a factory where all the most senior welders (20 plus men) wanted higher pay (prob getting under 25 hr) and ended up all quitting at once. The company just set up a welding school and I was one of the people trained to replace them, found this out after the fact. If you weld join a union and work pipelines or at least get a union cert for pipewelding / adjacent skills. The only guys not being severely underpaid in non union shops are the ones who have these certs. But mostly I got out of the field to not work under insufferable cunts and because everyone I met who was more than 8 years in to welding had sacrificed their body far more than I would want to.

The pay rate for welding and how the per hour works out is going to depend heavily on what it is you're welding and where.

One of my first jobs was a summer job making sets of gates and railings. Some of them where fancy electric ones that cost about 1.5k. They didn't actually take all too long to weld up. But there's also the steel cutting, fitting, galvanising etc to factor in.

I did enjoy it though. Much, much more satisfying seeing the awesome fruits of your labours than sitting at a desk all day staring at a screen or standard wagie work.
