outside of #spacedreams, land is very cheap underground.

ironically my first exposure to elon was regarding Hyperloop which I thought was retarded - if we can't even finagle the land to build high-speed rail in america, what are the chances we're going to finagle the land to build a giant expensive vacuum tube? the tube being "over" the land isn't a good thing - land underneath highways becomes blighted and unusable, and any hyperloop type thing would do the same thing to any land it went over.

underground is different. subways are great.

if you look at this handy map, you will see that there isnt much between LA and norcal worth stopping at, unless you're going to randomly swing through the central valley.

Amtrak having to stop at every bumfuck town it happens to pass through is a big part of the reason why it ISNT profitable.

have you ever ridden an amtrak outside the boston-washington corridor? thats the only profitable route. On all the rest, 95% of the stops involve one or two people getting on and off. But they can't just skip the place, because the locals have votes, and they feel like having an amtrak stop "puts them on the map", even if they never buy a ticket.

thats a big reason why high speed rail is so hard in america - every shitty tiny town that the route passes through wants the train to stop there, and trying to pass them over will get local legislators up your ass.

compare this map of germany to the above map of california. notice how germany has LOTS of high-pop and medium-pop cities that are worth it for a train to stop at?

if you'd like to see the problem america has, consider the Amtrak line "The Pennsylvanian."

At one end, it stops in Philadelphia, Newark, and NYC in rapid successoin - these are all very populous of course, but they're very close together, and there's plenty of other ways to get between them.

At the other end, it stops in Pittsburgh, a pretty good sized city by American standards.

What's in between? Fucking nothing. But the train stops at 20 different little bumfuck towns. Altoona. Paoli. Elizabethtown. Almost every passenger is going from NYC or Philly to Pittsburgh or vice versa - almost nobody boards or detrains in the stops in the middle, but they have to keep servicing them for political reasons.

As a result, The Pennsylvanian takes 8 hours to go a distance that takes 6 and a half to drive. At least it's cheap because it's usually half empty.

You're right that this is a problem, but it doesn't have to be one. It may be politically motivated but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed.
Germany has trains that stop at all 20 useless towns as well, but then they also have faster trains that skip the minor stops, and even faster trains that cost a bit more, only make the most essential stops, but replace the need for planes.

LIDAR is just a radar-type detection system - teslas from 2018 and earlier use LIDAR in addition to cameras to map the environment. Other carmakers have used LIDAR just to implement Assisted Cruise Control or Forward Collision Warning systems.

Teslas from after 2018 use cameras only, which i honestly dont like - thats part of why i got a 2018 one, actually. LIDAR works in fog, rain, and darkness.

You could be right that FSD "learns", but if it does, I haven't noticed - on a route i take a couple times a week, it always tells me to take a left turn at this one intersection that was changed to have no left turns a while ago, and despite me always going straight there, it hasnt stopped telling me to take an illegal left. Not a big deal, but I dont think it "learns" in that way.

>usually half empty
It's sold out every time I take it, since that's always around the holidays. The line's format is designed around peak travel times.

The small stops are brief and nobody's going to change their decision on whether to take it based on whether it's 7 or 8 hours. Cutting the travel time by a decision-changing amount would require running at a much higher speed in the wilderness, but that's an infrastructure problem. The tracks aren't high speed quality and they have to wait for freight trains that share the same tracks. That's expensive to fix. Even if they did fix it, speedfags would still take planes. The train is full of poorfags and niggers.

this is true, and also Amish people, sometimes.

"a lot" of people getting on or off in those towns is maybe ten at most, out of a train of four hundred. I think only maybe literally one time out of dozens of trips did i sit near anyone who wasnt going to philly/nyc/pittsburgh.

i'm not saying they could just skip those towns and zoom on through exactly - although at least beating the greyhound's time would be a perk. really its more that, when any new high speed rail is going to be built, no city/town likes to be passed over.

in pennsylvania, for example, it would be hard to get away with skipping the state capital in the middle, and then if you're already stopping there, why not another little city nearby because you wouldn't even have gotten up to speed yet, then why not the next one, etc etc etc.

Lol I love how a drive on 101 or better yet the California 1 (highway 1) is fucking god tier since you get to drive through the coastal mountains and things like Big Sur and is objectively one of the prettiest highways / drives in the USA..... but the I-5 route in the middle of California is one of the worst / most boring drives ever, through flat ass endless farm land and the odor of cow shit

I do this drive regularly as >>53666573 this anon does. My business partners are in LA while I'm in the Bay Area so I have to go south sometimes.

While the distance between LA and the Bay Area seems huge, people make the drive very often.

Two of the largest economies in the nation, the Bay Area and the LA - San Diego metro seem pretty far apart on the map but it's not terribly inconvenient to drive out there.

Also, I think there's an Amtrak in Santa Barbara. Has two trains: Coast Starlight and the Pacific Surfliner. The Coast Starlight runs once daily in each direction between Los Angeles and Seattle. .

Also while I'm rambling about this car drive, I encourage people to take the Highway 1 drive, it's fucking gorgeous.

In the original days railroads were the hot new meme to pump and dump retail with. They were popping up like dog coins and half of them were about as reliable. The great railroad barons were like Elon, dabbing on shitters like what he did with crypto. Nowadays private money doesn't see potential for returns in railroads. Maybe try convincing reddit to start a meme cult around a railroad startup and scam the ESG cucks with it.

i'm sorry but there's no way that happens. i always look out the window at how many people are waiting at the platform and its often like literally two people. theres no data on this that i can find, but ive ridden that train at least thirty times. usually not during holidays, and its usually half full at most. i mean, either way, the line doesnt make a profit, not that amtrak is really supposed to necessarily.

Right now I'm downloading all 16,000 tickers, plus some other stuff like commodity and forex and crypto prices to get a snapshot of the market. I realized it's actually trivial to grab a weekly copy of the screener, run some crude filters on it to get it down to about 3000 symbols, and then automate it (via scheduled tasks) to download symbols on saturday or sunday, then run my own desktop TA against it. The advantage of doing this is that I can brute force some things that TView won't let me, such as backtesting, once it's set up.

Blew through about $1,000 across 5 trades this week, so I need to dial it back and test the fuck out of things.

>>53667950
One of my ideas was to do a sector heatmap with actual fucking information on it. If I can see even the daily or weekly change without diving into every stock, I can see where the cash in/outflows are and build a thesis on that. Eg if I see a lot of money moving out of tech stocks, I can look into the macro and make a trade based around that.
I can also correlate assets so I don't double dip on risk, other stuff.
It's a lot of work, but no individual part is difficult. It just takes time and not being distracted

further, if youre just sitting in your room, you don't have any better access to info than anyone else - and if you have a fulltime job that isnt in trading, you dont have nearly as much time to read up on things as people who have all day.

obviously, the answer is thus that you must gain information by prowling the streets and by sniffing the wind, as you can gain insights that traders in offices won't.

You can find a good ideas for finding clusters of stocks and pair trades, arb ideas, etc etc by researching examples of people doing these type of clusters/pairs trades. I'll tell you what I'm working on rn.

Basically I have 3 parts to clustering
Industry data, price data, and long term quality data. You decompose the industry data into 3 levels
>level 1 would be industry such as healthcare

>level 2 would be like drug manufacturing

>level 3 would be cancer drugs.

And obviously I make this quantitative by saying okay they are 60% cancer drugs 40% heart meds and hence they are in multiple tier 3 clusters.
Basically this part is easy, you just decompose the 2SD range with a shumway stoffer smoother because kalman is too conservative and then model the tails conditionally.

Then you decompose their returns into an alpha factor framework which when it comes down to it should basically be all value and quality signals
You feed in IV, IC, IS and their premiums to a regime shift and a Q net deep reinforcement learning algorithm where you reinforce trigger based behavior so that it sets a trigger level not just tries to actively trade the spread. You need attribute embedding with an LSTM as well to help it manage risk and an autoencoder or encoder decoder setup to denoise the data (I go further with aforementioned alpha factors)

That was excess info, but just an example of how you can cluster these assets.

Most of my book for this project is pairs trading so one week mean reversion trades. The average half life is about 7 days. And it’s a very sharp gradient in those 7 days. At a shorter timeframe this systemic trading strategy works to trade semi HFT sorta shit.

Also the complexity of what I'm doing is not because I'm looking for actual alpha / gains lol. I'm doing this to impress someone (actually two people) who can pay me more than my current wagie job

My wife was working as a nurse in the CoVid wing for the entire thing and even she knew it was contrived. My job threatened to fire me, they tried to take my kids out of school, they tried to force me to mask everywhere. I will never forgive this people and I will never forget. Multitudes of people I thought had my back flipped to full on fascistic support of the global elite’s oppression of the common man. All it took was a little fear and some propaganda. Sickening.

>I don't know if you're projecting or what but the catalysts that could've gone one way or another (treatments work, vaccines work, casual spread in daycares/schools would sustain things) were all very transparent.
This is what I'm concerned about. If you're a true believer like this in some future bullshit pump, you're gonna lose everything. I'm sorry but that's the truth. Perhaps loss is the only way to learn though.
I'm fairly certain you're just coping though. You're unwilling to admit that you knowingly participated in a pump and dump. And that's fine I guess. But in that case you should just stay silent instead of trying to warp the past to your own mental fiction.

I see, so basically you look within a sector, and suppose a sector is extremely overvalued; then you long A and short B, expecting one to crash harder than the other, but using the other as an upside hedge.
So then, why not just trade sector ETFs or use options to hedge? You'd have to have pretty firm knowledge to know what two specific companies are going to do better or worse

You do exactly that for some pairs..... but to be honest anon if we're talking about making money....most of the most profitable spread trades I have ever done were on non-cointegrated time series. Lol.

I'll make this way simpler

99% of financial time series will not be cointegrated.

If they are they will be only weakly cointegrated with only the first two moments(parameters) being stationary that will most likely drift away from cointegration over time

To be honest I’ve simplified my methods for my own trades a lot and it actually works better

Mostly I just look for spreads that make economic sense

Like the crack spread and oil refineries

When I notice there is a massive disparity between the performance of the crack spread and refineries

Like there was late last year and earlier this year.

I’ll sell the crack spread and buy oil refineries

Or vice versa

There’s a few methods you can find in signal processing books

But there’s tons of different methods and variations of that method(looking at you GARCH)

But the point that matters is that is there a simpler model to explain what you are looking at

That’s what you should be striving for it to simplify models

The pairs are usually not even fundamentally related. But as I said though
Most profitable spreads will not be co-integrated

So your scans will not pick them up

The reason for that is because most of the time

The most profitable trades

Are the shit that’s never happened before

You find alpha in the shit no one has heard of

that's where alpha is

in non-obvious pairs

You think those 99 crypto shitcoin threads on the board are also just out there memeing for the fun of it?
Memeing can be entertaining, but on a financial forum like this it also serves as bait to get others to buy in. Even if unintentional, that's just the way it works. People chase momentum, new plays, new tickers. Then they win or they lose and they move on, except for very rare cases like GME where it becomes some permanent cult of suckers. Anyway, it's not worth debating any further.
