Mechanical Engineering is the perfect career. Demand for it never increases, the salary has been pegged to $65,000 for the past 20 years. All stocks associated with mechanical engineering are immovable, they simply stay exactly at their price point from 2004 regardless of what is happening in the wider economy.

Just because there hasn't been any innovation in Mechanical Engineering doesn't mean you don't need mechanical engineers.
It's not like every software developer is an A.I. researcher either. Most of them are web devs or make android apps and there isn't much "innovation" going on there either.
Most of the real innovation ironically comes from people who don't develop software to begin with: mathematicians, hardware developers, etc.

Cope. It requires nothing more complex than numerical simulation of PDE at the highest level, and it's monkey tier for the average person. SWE is much harder. ME employers don't grow, and MEs are easily replaceable and thus don't command a good salary. Maybe if they could even implement fizzbuzz they'd be able to make money.
