Is joining the military early and try to get to 20 year retirement a good financial move?

Probably the worst time to join the military since the early 60s. Two war monger US parties with a disaffected populace and a loosening grip on world trade. And desperate nations taking advantage of the financial crisis to attempt landgrabs.
It's just pure rng whether you'd get deployed and survive a drone swarm.

>> No.53614165

Future soldiers will carry light weight back packs and/or Big Dog robo-mules that project emp/maser energy shield defenses against swarms.
Drone swarms won't be a problem for properly equipped infantry, so humans are still relevant in combat.
The big problem is soldiers posting their locations to social media mid-battle from their smart phones.

Once a boot, always a boot lol.

It entirely depends on what branch you decide. First thing is to get a good ASVAB so you’re not just relegated to infantry, no matter how hard a recruiter may push you. The benefits are all the same once you retire: whether you did that in the Army/Marine Corps as a grunt with countless mental scars and possibly physical ones, or rather you skated by in a comfy office in the Navy/Air Force.

If you're literally a teenager and otherwise a massive fuckup at life, yes go do four years of service. I regret not doing it myself at that same point in my life. If you're over 25 and have any health issues at all or worse are overweight, don't even fucking think about it. They probably won't want you since you'll be too old and set in your ways to be broken and molded into what they want. Otherwise if you can deal with it being a constant shitshow and hating most of the people above, below, and at your level then there's worse jobs out there. If you're not a complete retard you can even get some certification or experience in a civilian relevant field, and there's far worse things than being a diesel mechanic with experience working on tanks and trucks.

pro tip:

Join rotc

go to undergrad with military paying for all/most of it.

when you are about to graduate, say you want to go to dental school.

Get military to pay for it and also give you living stipend

become dentist.

RThen choose your own adventure:

> do 5 years fixing the horrid teeth of all the complete trash enlisted people. then separate from service and find a 50 year old private practice dentist that specializes in family dentistry in the wealthy suburbs of whatever city you want to live in. Work for him for 5 years, then become partner. You are now 32 years old and he is 57 and ready to retire. Buy practice from him. at age 40, buy beach house or ski chalet (your choice). age 42, buy rental properties. age 45, buy boat or other vacation/rental property. take on ex service dentist like you were and start working 3 days a week. age 50, go to 2 days a week and start selling practice to new guy. add another young dentist to increas competition for buying your practice and making it more valuable. age 55, sell practice with right to work up to 100 days a year and also get 20% residuals for 20 years.
fully retired with $8 million in assets (adjust for inflation) and steady passive income of $150-200k by age 57

> Stay in military for 25 years, making good money with good benefits and invest it. Get resign bonuses every 2-4 years of up to $150k. invest 100% of these bonuses in something like a shwab dividend etf. Buy beach house and rental houses (or ski house). separate at age 50 or so and collect military pension. work for a corporate dental provider 2-3 days a week 40 weeks a year and emergency on call and make additional $200k+ a year. Do that til you don't feel like doing that anymore.

30 years ago, yes. Those pensions were insane, they literally had to create a program to try and convince people to get out early because it was so unaffordable for the government. I have multiple relatives making six figures in retirement from it.
Now, no. The program is largely self-funded (similar to a 401k) with only a small pension tied to it. Benefits are still good though, and I think it's a viable career path if you're looking for a reliable way to get out of poverty.

This. EVERYONE I know who joined the military got fucked up in some way. The lucky ones just had knee and joint problems. Those who saw combat developed substance abuse problems, and some had PTSD. The really unlucky one had permanent nerve damage, and can barely move without being zonked out his gourd on pain meds. His job in the air force (loading bombs onto planes) put him in contact with extremely dangerous chemicals, but the retard actually believed the military when they told him the damage came from standing on pavement for too long! Make money elsewhere, its not worth crippling yourself for ZOG and Raytheon.

It is. Didn't have a single thought about being able to retire at 38 when I joined at 18, but glad it worked out for me. I enlisted as a 11B (infantry) because I was young and wanted to shoot and fight in a war. 9/11 happened while I was in training and shipped out about 6 months after tech school graduation. After my first enlistment, I had my fill and lucked out not getting injured/killed. I retrained in communications (RF trans/SATCOM) and spent the rest of my career there. Retired at E-8 which I luckily got promoted about 2 years before I retired. It was more of a place holder and didn't have to be real master seargant. I just layed low since I knew I wanted to get out. Then I worked for Raytheon and L3 communications, working on the same equipment but on the civilian side making 3 times more and way less stress lol. Truly double dipping collecting my retirement from military and my normal pay check. Im also eligible for "free" medical but Id rather pay through my civvy job since my premiums are low, and the VA service fuckin sucks balls.

Only if you're facing homelessness, even then just do 4 years and get out.
Talk to any enlisted vet; you will not make it to 20 without significantly reducing your lifespan due to health complications. The only reason the government can afford the retiree plan is because these people don't live nearly as long as civilians. Also they cut the 20year thing sometime in the mid2010s, you'll get less than any of those guys by 10% I think.

Assuming you aren't a recruiter shill, go ask /k/ and hopefully they'll talk you out of your idiocy.

Coin flip. So many variables. It depends on your job. If you are doing something you like to do, or is so unique it really doesn't exist in the civilian world. The civilian sector is full of unpaid OT - especially if you are a contractor. I know so many people who became contractors. They were doing the same job. They just got more pay. Many had fewer benefits. Government contracting can be pretty merciless. You don't get fired, just replaced. You can easily be out of a job. Try to fire an incompetent SNCO.

Peacetime is the worst time to be in. Minimal congressional funding means less promotions and smaller pay increases. This is incorrect. You enlist as a commissioned officer candidate in the Army. Every other branch is street to commission. In the army you must go through standard enlistment basic training before you get a shot at OCS. Once you start OCS, you are promoted to SGT(E5) or SSGT (E6) depending on your OCS timeline (Traditional, Federal, State or Hybrid). Your service obligation (enlistment contract) gets nulled once you accept a commission and from their your service obligation restarts.

But I am talking non-comms; NCOs

Basically the requirement for them is following the rules and having demonstrated practical knowledge. Like a non-comm Sr. Chief might be under the Sr. Supply officer and his job is basically to make sure the food is ordered properly, stored properly and meals shifts staffed properly and menus planned properly do the Supply Officer doesn't get in trouble. If the Sr. Chief is doing his job correctly, he is mostly sitting around drinking coffee and yelling at the E1-3s whil keeping is uniform properly pressed so he doesn't look shabby.
