Daily reminder that:
VIX 17
Rates nearly 5%
Multiple extra rate hikes coming (yes, MULTIPLE)
Debt at insane levels
Inverted yield curve (multiple curves actually)
Tight labor market (upward wage pressure, opposite of what Fed wants)

This means there is no soft landing

Mumus are delusional and are going to get heemed and will ignore every single warning like this one because the euphoria is so strong

I have heard about so called "zombie companies" in the US who have survived the last 10 or so years due to low interest rates. Supposedly these zombie companies could maintain a high debt load because all they needed to do is just service the interest on their debt. Now that we are going to see a higher sustained interest rate for an extended period of time, wouldn't these zombie companies start to fail? I would think that that would cause some hesitancy for a bull market rally. Right now I'm still in JEPI to hedge against this risk, but I am starting to doubt whether or not the zombie company risk will actually come to fruition after seeing QQQ up almost 20% from the start of the year.

A hot inflation print will do that. All it takes is something that changes the narrative, which right now is wildly optimistic. Look at the narrative now, soft landing guaranteed, inflation good as done, new bull run. Once hard data shows still sticky services inflation and goods inflation that stops going down the market will flip to "oh shit it's fucked" and dump. Buybacks work wonders if your company is consistently profitable (META is) and growing (debatable if META is).

I think a lot of people are just skeptical ever since BBBY has nearly bankrupted themselves by burning all their cash on buybacks just to have to issue shares at even lower prices to survive.

I think it's easy for people to like dividends because it's another form of immediate, tangible gratification vs buybacks, which most people don't understand. Buybacks are better for tax reasons, and I'd also argue that BBBY's buybacks could have been legendary. People forget that GME bought back half of all its shares when it was $5, which is what allowed for it to squeeze to begin with.

With meta showing you can improve your stock price despite a ridiculous miss with no scrutiny, I expect all the other failing companies to do the same, hoping that next quarter the financial situations would have improved enough that they won't be down in the hole as much, thus making them look better than the previous quarter, thus fixing their price.
Once again: think of buybacks the same way you think of dividends. If the company generated lots of profit and is doing a buyback with it, this is a good sign. But if the company is in the hole and is still doing a buyback, it means they're even worse off than they let on.
