With AI, an impending economic downturn fucking superfluous admin white collar people, and even retards like Sam Hyde 10 years ago saying not to go to college, are zoomzooms about to flood the skilled trades and devalue them and the news media is crying more more more to oversaturate the field as much as possible for their rich friends? The irony is that white collar people sat at desks predicted the imminent end of truck drivers around 2010. It's more likely that all commuter/small vehicle transportation will be automated before 50ton trucks, given the catastrophic consequences of computer error with a heavy vehicle.

Things like carpentry, plumbing are hard to automate, as opposed to any job where a human sits in front of a computer.

Carpentry seems good. Good enough for Jesus good enough for me.
I tried tradie stuff and the coworkers ruined it. Hours were long and somewhat erratic. Never got 2 days off in a row. But the coworkers really just killed the job. I went in with zero experience and I made that abundantly clear. I got one day of online training then I got put into the shop. The coworkers kept messing with. Purposely telling me the incorrect information to get me in trouble. It was very odd. The assistant boss was a pain too really believed in making yourself look busy. Couldn't be me. They were also very vulgar and smelly. One guy always smelled like a sewer.

They can also be a kind of shit-filter to tell you if the new guy has his head on straight, or will be a liability.
I got tested by stuff like that during my first engineering internship at a factory. The maintenance guys asked me for an "Aluminum magnet", which I recognized was a shit test, but I played along. When I came back with a roll of duct tape and said
>Here's that Aluminum magnet you asked for. It was right next to the left-handed crescent wrenches

Hello, actually in the industrial sector here vs talking out of the ass.

No - there is still extremely limited interest in any sort of manual labor positions, especially in the younger generations. Businesses in the US are relying heavily on their older workforce currently and the younger generation shows no interest in it regardless of pay. I can't really understand it but overall we desperately need more people in the trades. Please dear God learn to weld.

Older zoomer here. I come from a long line of tradesmen and I had it drilled into my head for my entire life the horrors of blue collar work. I didn't believe them at first and when I was little I'd say "I want to climb on the roof like you one day!" and they would laugh and pat me on the back and say "No you're not. You're going to college." And to enforce this my dad put me to work in roofing in the summers in high school. After 4 summers of that I can safely say I am glad that's not me and I'm not tarnishing my family wish to see me be successful in an easier way. I would say the worst part in working construction, even worse than the pay and conditions is the absolute bottom of the barrel kinds of people you work with. Granted my dad owned the company so I worked with him mostly and I was shielded from these types, but I still saw a lot of their antics.

So you want some more tradespeople? You're hurting for it? Not my problem. I firmly believe that any slack left by zoomers in the construction industry will (if it hasn't already) be picked up by hispanics. The pol schizos can say what they want about them but they work harder than anyone else and the old meme that their work isn't good is starting to crack as there are so many of them that some really good tradesmen are rising to the top. I know 4chan loves to look at the trades with rose tinted glasses but it's really a bad lifestyle. I make more money than an expert journeyman with 30+ years of experience and I'm not even 30 yet, all because I went to college for a degree that leads to a great career.

It's only smaller Hispanic crews who use a 2x4 to screed anymore, we use a vibrastrike, or a truss screed, followed by a power trowel. Why? More efficient with less guys. I think large commercial buildings will follow suit with tracks and large truss screeds..give it 20-30 years. Once it takes it off, it'll be downsized for smaller applications. Attached to the track is a "printer" that connects to a gps system with programmed dimensions and elevations. Spanning your slab is a system of hoses that spray a Portland, small aggregate mix. What I think will be tricky is working around the larger rock they normally use in your standard int/ext mixes.

So yeah, maybe not "3d printing" per se, but more of an automated track system. You wouldn't need to have any guys at all in the mud.

I knew they've been experimenting with them in the last several years, but reading the comments on the vid, seem like they're getting slightly more popular in new housing developments.

Impressive stuff, though that looks like a pure Portland, sand, fly ash, and water mix. No rock. I wonder how they'll hold up in areas with earthquakes. Also, no rebar?

Way out of a price range for a crew with 3-10 guys though.

They're getting a lot of government funding because the goal is to adapt the technology for off-world use. Being able to mix up concrete from lunar or Martian regolith and locally sourced water ice, then print it without needing manual labor from astronauts in space suits, is going to be a big driver of building things like concrete landing pads for rockets on the Moon and Mars.

Instead of rebar they use a mix of fibers to help with tensile strength where they can, and you can still insert rebar into what's already printed and use magwelding to attach it to the foundation through the already printed and still drying concrete. It's very interesting shit, extremely expensive but possible. To your point joining a trade can be a great job, my only advice to people is to know what you're worth and do everything you can to be nice to your joints/don't be a tough guy and shirk off ppe when necessary. Cut your teeth for a few years working for less than what you think you should be paid and when you finally know your shit and can prove it with hopefully a good reference to back it up, either join a real crew making real money or strike out on your own. In my experience dealing with druggies, assholes, druggie assholes and getting constantly fucked on pay is what kept the zoomzooms out the most if they had any other option available to them. Being a darker skin tone also helps huge if you're working in the sun, I'm white as fuck and did it for years but even developing a tan I still wore long sleeve shirts and wasn't afraid of sunscreen. Skin cancer ain't a joke and it ain't just the white dudes at risk for it. Also, fucking learn spanish no matter what color you are.

Obviously this has some nuance to it and people take it too far too often, but getting your nuts busted by methuselah until you can bust his back is gonna be part of it no matter what trade you go into. A good foreman/leader will keep it within reasonable bounds, shit ones and dickheads don't and you shouldn't work for them. Just be glad it's not the old days anymore, they'd shitkick people back then for not being good or fucking something up. Most everyone I worked with was polite because we all had hammers on our belts and more often than not a gun in the truck but I've still seen a few people get into fistfights over the absolute dumbest shit you can think of or for trying to steal tools.

Their pay never changed despite this increase in production, so the owner/investors pocket the diff. At the end of the day, no matter what you do, if you don’t own your labor and are on the cutting edge then you will be invalidated. Being an analyst isn’t about being right, it’s about making the labor owner feel good about themselves and being able to tell a story. On the contrary my friend, i think i the future there is going to be a significant decrease of tradespeople that have the same mentality that you have, and will be replaced by the Ai's themselves, only to find the AI suck since they trained it with their data. Much to people's chagrin, we are all just being used to train the next gen of artificial intelligences, for free. Something that should cost money is actually free now because a lot of "free services" can just give people half assed experiences of the future and ask for feedback and voila, you have a training machine constantly running and pumping your bot of juicy, rich, info constantly.
That's why i think a lot of the real traders should worry more about training their minds to become irreplaceable in the future. Everyone going for bluechips? Go for memefi, tackle vinu, tackle doge and shib, a lof of people made money with it so why can't you?
Everyone going for machine learning? Tackle other use cases, be THE master. Overcome the AI

I've been in trades all my life. Learned the ins and outs of a mechanical press and now own my own business. No gpt or robots will ever be able to do my job. Setting up a press within half a thousandths with a dial indicator is something a robot will ever be able to do.

This, all generative AI is the equivalent of when you BSed your college essays where you just created a soup of words and phrases that sounded mostly right and show you at least skimmed the material so you’d skate by with a B.

That’s all it can do, it can create something that is believable to a retard but is incapable of creating anything truly novel or following precise instructions. If you use this tech to program something complex, it’s just going to spit out a bunch of meaningless spaghetti code. The issue is the difference between natural languages vs formal languages, computer code is a formal language where everything is extremely precise and a single fuckup can make your entire program invalid. You can’t fake it which is what ChatGPT does, it’s essentially a very convincing con man

>> No.53506515

>>53506435

Another issue with AI is the way it works has absolutely nothing to do with how the human brain works (which nobody fully understands). It’s only as good as its training data, you have to give it millions of examples of something and have it “learn” but this has zero to do with how humans learn. The model you build off this training data is at the end of the day just a high order math function which is inherently rigid and inflexible. The model can be easily fooled by playing with the inputs (just numbers) in such a way that the classifier algorithm spits out a value that results in a false positive/negative. Example: putting a piece of tape over a stop sign was enough to fool Tesla’s self driving software (which has been trained on millions of stop signs) to not recognize it as a stop sign

The only answer is to start your own business and set your own hours and dictate exactly what projects you want and which ones you don't. Set your own rate and get paid what the market will provide for the craft that you've perfected. Your back starts hurting? Take a week or two off work. Or hire a low paid helper to lift the heavy stuff for you and build that cost into your bids.

I'd love to get into woodworking myself. Sounds like you're reasonably intelligent as well. Why not start a company, get a loan, and invest in a CNC machine?

QUALITY woodwork will always be valuable to people. Even if you just made coffee tables with some beautiful ornate designs, it'd be a good starting point for you, and could lead to more niche/valuable projects.

I'd love to move on from tech, but I've got a good 10-15 years in here before I can secure enough money for a house/retirement and can focus on other paths. Good luck m80
