In the upcoming recession, retail is going to be clobbered once again. The diamond hand traders of Reddit and Twitter are going to cry market manipulation and take their money to the sportsbooks because they think they are smart and they have a “system” to win. It's not driven by high-level executives. It's directors in resources seeing the news and deciding it's time to look into where cost-cutting can be made and then that filtering into public consciousness as a highly strategic decision. All companies have rent-seeking parasites, if you look you will find them.

Basically my view is the same as yours in that tech executives don't have a clue. Any company of sufficient scale becomes organic and in this case the activities of large companies have been misread by analysts and the media.

The dividend yield is sorta misleading because the company declares a monetary amount of the dividend say $1 and if the company’s shares are at $10, then it is 10% yield. And if the company declines 50% to $5, now you have a 20% yield with no fundamental change and you have a growing risk that the company slashes their dividend.

Hope that makes sense.

depends on the company and the faith the investors have in the company for the company to be able to
>continue paying the dividend
investors may doubt that the dividend will continue to be paid at the level that it is indefinitely
>remain profitable
investors could doubt longterm profitability, and think that the dividend is not sustainable for profits
>keep growing
investors may accept the 10% dividend as an equilibrium point, where the company will not keep growing their revenue / profits, but that their income stream is 'guaranteed' so it is valued solely as a dividend stock
Each time the dividend gets paid out it is essentially subtracted from the share price
In other words, if you had a 10% dividend on a $20 a share stock paid quarterly, each ex-dividend date the stock *should* fall $0.50 to $19.50
If every time the dividend is paid out and the stock falls $0.50, and nobody is willing to bid it higher than $20.00, it can stay in that range between $19.50 and $20.00 as you are saying

TSLA is acting like a shitcoin again...

>> No.53495993

everyone in /smg/ needs to understand about the mass layoffs the following
>1: advertising money is one of the first things to get cut in a downturn
advertising is a variable cost that can be cut extremely easily - when a company is trying to scale back their expenses, they can cut advertising / marketing budget, without laying off employees
tech companies are basically just advertising companies - they are the first to see the downturn, and it's a leading indicator for the rest of the economy
you shouldn't look at tech layoffs and go "oh, it's just worthless tech"-- it is an indicator of companies across the whole economy cutting back their advertising
>2: Companies really struggled to acquire employees during covid - they now want to wait as long as possible before doing job cuts
during covid companies were struggling to attract labor - they had to offer higher wages in order to get employees to come work for them. They struggled for almost a year to fill their payroll - it was a lot of work - now that the economy is going into downturn, they remember how hard it was to get their employees that they are hesitant to layoff employees if they don't absolutely have to
For this reason, the layoffs are 'delayed' comparatively - but they are coming
It always starts as a slow trickle, and then builds to a deluge flood - if you see a dam with a slow trickle / leak, you should be concerned
>3: the layoffs are now beginning to hit the 'real' economy outside of advertising
we are now seeing the layoffs now in banking and industrials
>4: Mass layoffs are extremely bearish - it means that there is a lot less consumption - the economy is 70% consumption
1 company laying off 1,000 employees is good for that company's bottom line. 1,000 companies laying off 1,000 companies is terrible for everyone, as everyone has less income, less money to spend - everyone drastically reduces their consumption

except it isn't priced in. S&P500 earnings are expected to grow 4% this year.
https://www.morganstanley.com/ideas/s-and-p-500-earnings-estimates-2023-too-optimistic
>The operating margin of the S&P 500 Index, at 11.6%, is still near the all-time high of 13.1% reached in late 2021—notably above pre-pandemic levels of 10.2% and the rolling 10-year average of 9.4%.
>2022 nominal revenues for S&P 500 companies were 8% above the 10-year trend.
>Last year’s real, or inflation-adjusted, consumption was about 7% above its long-run trend.
we are extremely above trend, and the market is pricing in that it will be only better this year
>These above-trend numbers underpin today’s consensus forecasts for 2023 S&P 500 earnings growth of nearly 4% to $228 per share
It is not priced in whatsoever
If you could say "hey, S&P500 earnings are estimated to be 10% lower this year, the recession is priced in" I would say maybe you have a point, maybe it's priced in, maybe it won't be as bad as a 10% drop in earnings

it's inflation propaganda being pushed nationwide right now, in an effort to drive down the prices of eggs
too many consumers were becoming alert to the extremely high price of eggs, so have to run the propaganda machine to tell people that they are bad for you, to try and reduce their consumption and decrease the prices
if people start talking about inflation in their day to day lives, talking about how high the price of eggs are / making jokes about it, then inflation expectations become entrenched, and other people are more likely to begin raising their prices on their goods and services, making the Fed's job more difficult in controlling inflation
so, run the propaganda machine..
