Ok, I have a really stupid question about Uber. Why the hell are they still not profitable? (Excluding their ridiculous metric for profitability which practically says they're profitable if they exclude all expenses)

I just don't get it, technically they're just maintaining an app and have legal representation in many countries to address possible issues. What's their expense beside this? Are they hiring insane numbers for no reason? I can't fathom why they would need 30k employees to maintain a map, an algorithm and non-existent marketing. Openstreetmap is a community map and better than Uber map. A lot of Uber drivers already use Google maps instead of Uber's routing algorithm so there's no pressure on that side either.

Man, I must be stupid. I am missing something.

Nope, and that's exactly it. They're just so flush with cash that they are spending money on as much vertical integration as possible and that means they MUST develop their own internal map platform from scratch and it MUST be used by drivers in the future because that's the future.

well because uber eats is a huge con the food quality is crap. they should do more to vet restaurants. or just start their own restaurants

Why? What's the point of vertical integration for them? Just leave it up to the driver to use whatever they want and just be the marketplace matching drivers with riders.

chatgpt answer:

Uber is not yet profitable because it continues to invest heavily in various initiatives, such as expanding into new markets, developing autonomous vehicle technology, and improving its overall operations. Additionally, the company faces high levels of competition and significant regulatory hurdles, which can increase its costs and impact its bottom line.

they’re basically the equivalent of a utility company now. once we’re all eating the bugs and don’t own cars they will flip the script
