Because it didn't respect the artistic medium of coinage. Coins are SCULPTURES, not DRAWINGS. Drawings always have at least two colors, one from you media and one from your canvas. A coin almost always just works with a single color, the metal. And since the relief of most coins is generally very low, faces are generally done from a portrait angle as features such as nose and eye depth aren't as noticeable in a profile. Too many people think of black and white drawing of a coin will look good, when it very likely won't.

Crypto requires electricity and people can steal it without needing to leave their own home. Cold storage devices that prevent this theft (from hacking) also prevent you from easily accessing/using the coins. Electronic devices that store crypto (either in cold storage or on a device) are much more vulnerable to damage/loss than say, a locked safe. There is tons of crypto locked away/lost that will never be usable, either because someone lost their key or the HD it was on was lost/damaged. Whereas if someone buries a bunch of PM and dies(or a treasure galley sinks), the PMs can still be recovered at some point.

Crypto certainly has some use benefits, but I don’t think it’s superior to PM, especially as the geopolitical situation changes.

zBrush, actually introduced relief-conversion tools so it would be easy to create a good coin based on an existing model if it looks good not using textures. (the only additional work would be modeling the pupils instead of using textures.)
