Yea, something pretty crazy is going on right now. They can keep the algo humming along but the back offices are on fire.
What is worrisome to me is that no one is stepping in to fix the problem or force the shorts to close. This is likely due to the fact that they are so over leveraged that they can't close. And they also know that the stock market is so full of hot air and counterparty risk that there is no chance in hell of covering and no one has anything to left to do or say. It's like having a minute to run as far away as you can from a nuclear bomb. It's pointless.
The big thing we are all waiting for here is whether or not these short squeezes can even be unwound without destroying the whole financial system. Is the U.S. on the cusp of an actual collapse? Why isn't anyone doing anything to save face if they don't actually think the system will continue on for whatever reason. If not at least Wallstreet and the banks are the ones set to implode. The problem being they were counterfeiting so many companies and stealing so much money that they have no hope of cleaning up the mess they created. So who is going to pay? Here's some RSU's for Patty Wu, they were just granted last August and last up to 2025, I bet other directors had very similar deals. If that's the case then the $4.9 figure would be taking into account only 1/3 of the 14k granted shares, if I had to price anchor a M&A takeover price then $15 would be my guess.

They would have to close all short positions and buyback shares in accordance with closing said positions before trading ended for the ticker, which would have a set date as established by the M&A official announcement. I'd wager that's where a lot of the insane volume has been coming from over the past month, institutions and individuals buying back shares to close out their borrows they used to short with before the price rips and they can no longer do so. The part where they're completely fucked is the swaps cannot be rolled again per the CFTC and because of the simple fact nobody can underwrite fraud once it's known fraud as the risk profile is unlimited, which means there's still several total number of shares ever issued by the company that need to be repurchased to exit all short positions/return all shares borrowed to short sell with directly. You will most likely see a big rip upwards in the price once this all becomes more public knowledge than it is currently being relegated to schizos on mongolian beef appreciation forums like this one, and then once it settles in price you would see an equity issuance or cash offer (more likely the former) for anyone still holding shares after the volatility.

Anyway, if we use the same logic with BBBY and expect a 2x from its ATH, that puts us at a $13b market cap, and at $111 ATH in price.

These are conservative numbers. A m&a that isn't at a fixed price (shares for shares or cash&shares for shares) will likely cause the price to go much higher. That's what happened with VW.
