The entire calculation depends on BYBK doing buybacks only at fair value. If the company is buying back shares while it is overvalued than drops by 50% or more, half of the cashflows were wasted. Of course, the inverse also applies and if a company buys back while it is below fair value and then rallies 50% in a year, it creates significantly more value for its shareholders.
Sadly, the former is much more likely to happen, as research has shown that companies are more aggressive using buybacks during bull markets then during a downturn. Just look how many companies were buying back in 2020 and 2021, that are now trading at a fraction of their former market cap.
