And lets say I'm able to sell them fractionally in small incremental amounts over a long period of time. What happens to the shares themselves if they are still gaining and I never put new money back into it?

The whole point of a company is to grow to the point that they become a dividend company. What’s the point of having reliable cash flow if you don’t return it to investors. Same goes for private equity. You can either buy in in the hopes that you get bought out, or to when the company reaches a point that it pays a quarterly dividend.

Buybacks + covered calls is nice too.
Easy to confidently sell calls against your position when you know that management is actively in the market propping up the price of those shares.

Dividends are qualified after just 60 days hold before/after the dividend date. If a stock has a big dividend coming up, you can buy ahead of time to recieve that dividend at the qualified rate, then dump that shit for a short term loss. It'll negate your other short term cap gains, and you'll be left with just a dividend taxable at the 15-20% rate. This is more relevant if you're making enough to be hitting the higher tax brackets.
I'd recommend selling covered calls into the distribution as well, for slightly more premium and a cushion against any volatility. The premiums won't be great though, since they'll have been repriced already to account for any known dividend payouts.

Stock buybacks are another way to make the shareholders richer. It doesn't have to be dividends specifically.
But basically you're right. A common pattern is the company reinvests cash and grows until it has fewer growth opportunities. Then it generates cash for its shareholders through dividends or other means. There's nothing wrong with dividends (ignoring taxes).
