I am doing my PhD in computer science. I went to a wedding recently and every time someone asked me about my job, after telling them about said PhD, they very nearly always asked about Bitcoin. And after telling them it was a stupid fucking idea, the response was never "oh wow, someone with expertise in computers thinks this is dumb, I should take a second look." It was always "something something fiat something something fud."

And this bullshit has bled into my professional life. A few months ago my advisor tried to get me to start research in blockchain and I had to tell him directly: "hard pass, thanks." Even my most recent paper, which has nothing to do with blockchain, has to mention bitcoin in the fucking introduction because it's about P2P networks and not mentioning it would mean fewer eyeballs see it (I would just leave it out, but my coauthors insist).

fucking libertarians just go read the fountainhead and leave the rest of us alone ffs

I don't get it. Here and Reddit keep telling me bitcoin and blockchain are the future. So as a PhD, you would be well versed in upcoming technology that the world will adopt?

Imagine if a doctor wasn't aware of some new breakthrough treatments. He would lose his license.
