Depends on what school, what program, and what professor you work under. Be specific dude.

PhD isn't worth it unless you have a specific job in mind that needs it or want to be a professor (fat chance nowadays). Masters can be decent for unlocking better jobs and getting your foot in the door with an internship while you do it.

That’s too vague. What program specifically and why do you want to do it?

>> No.53230851

I should probably add that I’m considering one myself right now and might start in August so I don’t think it’s completely retarded.

How do you mean, anon?

It's a big waste of time, they'll only talk about hyper specific research/journals that they or their colleagues publish. Once it's time for your thesis, if it isn't along their lines of thinking they'll bust your balls at every step.

Depends on your field, but it's super competitive nowadays for most things. You'll probably have to move somewhere far away to get a position, and then spend a decade trying to get a tenured position.

Don't let me discourage you if that's your dream, just saying it's hard these days to become a full professor. Especially at a good school. But if that's what you really want to shoot for, go for it.

I spent like a whole year barely doing anything and mostly assembling my committee, getting them to read my dissertation, and coordinating my exit exam. Huge pain in the ass.

Most colleges are looking for ways to reduce the number of faculty since the COVID lockdowns as well.

its great for networking / getting into fasttrack channels into good jobs. at my mba program, as long as you showed up to all the events and werent completely retarded, a high level consulting gig / IBanking gig was virtually guaranteed. ofc, whether those jobs are actually worth it or not is a different story

Grad school is a huge joke in and of itself. Imagine believing being some prof.’s bitch and grading papers while paying for the privilege is some kind of worthwhile endeavor.

basically this but if you're a high-achiever you can be paid to go to grad school. i had a free ride and made $36k over two years for TA work, which was mostly just marking and entering grades. u get to deal with hot girlies who want to impress you all the time btw
