Hey /smg/! I'm a dumb gay bear who likes getting rammed in the asshole and I just wanted to stop by and express my superior opinion that NVDA, TSLA and META are completely useless companies that are only still around because reddit buys their stock. To anyone paying attention, these companies produce literally nothing of value - I know this because I have access to information that you don't, and I'm 100% certain that in five years the world will no longer use graphics processors, electric cars or virtual reality. In fact, it's clear that those sectors are on their way out for good. Good luck bulls ha ha!

>any reason to not short BBBY
because you risk getting gamma squeezed - the IV on puts is so high that it isn't worth buying premium
if you short the stock itself, you risk getting gamma squeezed
to put it in simple language
>market makers / institutions / funds sold calls on BBBY
>as the stock price moves up, they are losing money
>in order to hedge the calls they sold, as it moves higher, they need to buy stock
>the more stock they buy, the higher the price moves up
>everyone who sold calls is 'squeezed' to buy shares to hedge
you never know how far a gamma squeeze will run, or when it will sharply reverse
more often than not, in my experience with various gamma squeezes, it reverses only after hitting an absurd ATH in premarket following a day of a squeeze like today - so tomorrow near open, or near 7:00am open for most brokers
It is such a large gamble, where the risk:reward to short it isn't very good
You could sell calls, or call spreads, to take advantage of the high IV, and you're much more likely to profit on the trade

I don't trust crypto.
I've had my hand in it before, and it was not a comfortable feeling at all. It's the 24 hour market cycle and the fact it could all be shut-down tomorrow if the American government rejects it, and then there are heavy taxes for running it as well as cyber attacks, scams, etc as well as the element of hoping that it runs up in value when it may not and may crash without warning.

If I were to play the game of crypto, I would rather just use margin on the stock market.

I only want to deal in stocks.

Part of the beauty of buybacks is that smart companies can buy back opportunistically when their shares are undervalued. Then they can pause the program when shares become relatively overvalued temporarily.

If buybacks became a prominent metric in statistics lists, you might get a bunch of morons chasing buyback yield while ignoring all other metrics. You can easily generate some charts or statistics yourself though.

How does this improve corporate earnings for Q1 2023? Q2? Q3? Q4?
How does them pivoting put more money into corporate earnings?
It will lag by 12-24 months..
We are going into a severe recession, both here and globally
We are seeing a total collapse in global trade
The market is still delusional obsessed with the Fed pivoting or not, not realizing that a pivot means that the economy is in collapse

I guess you could do the same for the others, if your portfolio was small, but my intuition tells me that the flexibility and liquidity of SPY and SPY options chain would outweigh the lower fees of VOO, but I haven't done any testing to back up this claim, and it would be hard to backtest
VTI if you must one out of the 3, since it's total index - but imo the benefit of S&P500 is that it is changing / self healing and kicks companies out

A dividend is just a return of cash on the balance sheet. It's not a reliable indicator of anything. The indicator your thinking of is in fact, earnings. To be more precise, it's really the cashflow that allows capital returns and specifically the free cashflow if you want it to be sustainable.
These same earnings also drive buybacks.

There is effectively zero difference between the two, except tax impact which hits dividend investors harder. There are also a few exceptions like REITs/MLPs that are required to distribute profits.
In a tax protected account dividends have a slight advantage since the buyback surcharge applies at a corporate level.

In general, I'd recommend looking for quality companies at good valuations whether or not they pay a divvy, as they will outperform in the long term. Don't be a retard like >>53223251 buying KO and underperforming for decades while funding a company that directly contributes to the growing health decline in America, all the while thinking you're a genius because "lol the dividend grows guys. just to give you more information - and some may disagree with this / it's not certainty what I'm saying, but often when trading something like this where you're trying to take advantage of the ridiculous IV, it is better to sell the call spreads closer to the current date
for example, the 27th Jan strikes are ~380% IV
by April it drops to 270%
and don't get me wrong, this is still extremely ridiculously high IV, and you're very likely to profit on this trade due to IV crush; but you may profit more / have even more PoP with the higher
but probably more risk, and less time for the trade to work in your favor
just something to keep in mind - and I'm sure you probably looked at this already / know this already

If a stock says they will do a buyback theres nothing for me to go off of. LUMN, for example, said they will do buybacks instead of divvys this year because they got heemed last year but I have no clue how that will affect my profile atm.

you can tell just by looking at the yield curve
https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/bond/tmubmusd10y?countrycode=bx
bookmark this page
scroll down and you can view the other bonds
yield curve would say ~6 months leaning toward 1 yr - so around 7-8 months
however you can also look at federal funds futures here and get an even more accurate idea of exactly when the market expects a pivot
https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html?redirect=/trading/interest-rates/countdown-to-fomc.html
go to "14 June 23"
you can see that there is a 36.5% expected chance that we'll be at 5% or 5.25% by then
when you go to July that drops to 29.9%
September 21.4%
so market is expecting the pivot around June - July
I have now taught you how to fish, so that you may feed yourself for a lifetime

My point is that it's really consistency of earnings driving that. But since you want an example here's the one I typically give. AZO buys back persistently around 5-10% of shares each year. Earnings metrics compound as remaining outstanding shares continue to decline, along with some organic growth in sales/store and number of stores opened.
Dividend investors will miss out on this clear outperformer.

When I say dividends don't matter. I don't mean you have to run off and chase the newest SPAC before it declines 90%. There's a wide world of stocks out there, with varying capital return and allocation strategies.

the rate for the 6 month bill is 4.895%
the rate for the 1 year is 4.8101%
normally, in a non fucked by the Fed market, interest rates are higher the further out in time you go
people charge a higher rate of interest if they're going to lock up their money for 30 years compared to for 6 months
the inversion, and then the drop from the 6 month to the 1 year indicates that rates will go down during this period
so you can tell from looking at the yield curve, that the 1 year yield is less than the 6 month yield, that the market expects a cut to happen between those two time periods
and if you look at federal funds futures, it corroborates this

it is the ultimate patrician hobby
to set up an "okay" tank can cost you $5-10,000

there are corals and fish that go for $5,000

I don't love target date funds, but in my 401, that's where I'm at. Depending on your income level, starting a Roth is a great idea. But once your marginal rate hits 22% use a 401 to stay out of that bracket. It's better to invest 100% of that, rather than pay the government 22% of your income. Your young, DCAing through the dot com crash, and the financial meltdown, has put me in a very much better place financially. Buying when it's down 14%,25%,50%,75%, is how, when it goes back up (and yes it might take a decade) you really look like you are smart. The brokerage accounts and 401s that perform the best are the ones that people forget they have, and let compounding gains do their thing. If being down 14% makes you nervous, a growth fund lost well over twice that much in 2022.

Hard to say without any details, but in general, if you feel like you need to ask, it's often time to at least take some profits, to an extent that you can live with it if it goes down again.

This is known as the Make It Or Die portfolio. It will literally print money this year.

No one on Biz has ever been able to debunk this when it's posted, they just seethe.
