Assay bars aren't generally "rare" like numismatic coins. The assay card is mostly there for verification purposes. The point of a bar is for the metal value and the assay doesn't do anything for the actual value so I don't see any need to hold onto it, value-wise.

That's where my problem lies. How durable is this plastic? Even a 1/20 or a 1/40 goldback is still a relatively thin foil. If plastic wears out next thing that will be taking the beating is the gold.
