I live nearby to this guy, he has his pod outside his house as free advertising and I have to say that it's legitimately a cool thing to have in the garden, but it's total bullshit that it's a house replacement. It's like a really expensive summerhouse. Even with like 5 connected together they offer such small practical space that there's limited utility beyond a desk/sofa/bed.

That hasn't stopped me from considering getting one myself though, Maybe I just like it because it reminds me of the space pods from dragonball Z, I dunno. Seems like a nice thing to watch birds from and chill out in the garden in, while LARPing as Vegeta.

I think your argument is a moot point as these aren't for undesirables to begin with. They're targetting the middle class for shit like glamping, adding an extra room to airbnbs or for having an outdoor office in the garden. The benefit (for the UK market) is that they don't need planning permission to install as they are classed as a temporary structure, while still looking like more effort was put into them than a mobile home or shed.

I don't think these offer the space to yield efficiency to be a serious longterm rental option compared to apartments or HMOs, but can certainly be used to commercialise underutilised garden space and greenbelt/forest land that otherwise can't have permanent structures placed on them, for short stay hospitality and events.
