>how long do the hens live?
Depends on the breed, but around ~7 years if you keep em healthy and roughly 5 yrs of 1 egg/day production
>do you eat the hen when it dies, or maybe cull them before they die of disease?
Only if they're meat birds. You can get strict laying hens or meat birds which are larger but don't lay as often. Mine are hybrid which you can slaughter to eat, but I love them too much and they give me an absolute fuck ton of eggs that I give to frens since I have too many
>do you ever let some of the eggs hatch to get new hens? if so what if it's male?
If you don't have a rooster you won't get fertilized eggs for obvious reasons. Some people like having a rooster because they lead your pack and herd in the hens at night time, but I find the idea of eating fertilized eggs kinda gross. You can still eat them, but you can occasionally see spots of blood in your eggs. I just prefer cracking them and not getting surprises

As for disease, you're fairly fucked if even one gets sick, as they'll all be sick unless you isolate the ill one very early. My hens got ill on my first year and I lost one (RIP) but the rest beat it and survived

>the daily work needed
The daily work is opening the eggbox and taking the eggs out. I use the deep litter method inside, so that's an annual cleaning, and I just move it to planter boxes to fertilize my garden. I put wood chips in the bottom which break the shit down real nice and is maintenance free. I have to fill that water jug every couple months (I think? it's so infrequently I can't even tell you). The most maintenance I have with this setup is supplementing diet with the feeder, maybe once a week. That's the next system I'm gonna do something about. Overall I barely notice I have 6 hens. Well, 5 now. That's another bonus.

Dealing with animals is a dirty business.
Absolutely false, exposure to animals gives you a stronger immune system. The cure for smallpox was found after they noticed milk maids were immune to it. Chicken mites can't live on humans, bird flu is ordinarily not transmissible. Just don't sleep in the chicken coop or eat lash eggs and you will be healthier than the chickenless.
