And how much corn do you have to feed them to get them to produce 1 egg? How much corn equals one egg? How much does that amount of corn cost, compared to how much one egg costs?

It takes a out 3 cents of chicked scratch to get an egg which is worth 30 cents. They love eating any bugs including crickets and roaches.

3 chickens should be fine with a cup of corn/carrot/lettuce/rice per day + their feed.

I buy a 50lb bag of chicken feed about once every 2 months or so, it costs about $17 and feeds my 12 chicken flock (smaller flock due to culling the fall to get ready for spring chicks). So per chicken per day it's pretty inexpensive, but then tell yourself how much you'd pay for a single egg and the feed will probably come out as more expensive once factoring in the days where they don't lay. The whole flock didn't lay for a month after brooding and mothering the new chicks. Not to mention half of those chicks become roosters that you inadvertently feed for a few months and then selectively cull when you find which meets your standard and could potentially replace the main rooster down the road.
