Electrician here, trades are what you make it. Electrical and instrumentation can be pretty clean and well paying depending on what route you go. Carpentry, concrete, hvac, tile etc suck and are hard on the body. The problem with tradies is even when they make good money they still retain low class financial habits: never save for retirement, don't understand net vs gross wages, and spend their money as fast as they make it.

I enjoy my field, but I seek out lower paying jobs where I can work alone because I despise working with the lowlife tradies I would run into on higher paying union construction jobs.

Sometimes I regret not getting a college degree, but I had no interest in engineering or medicine, and the fields I was into, history, architecture, and graphic design, didn't appear to have good employment prospects. Wouldn't be against learning to code on the side, but don't really want to go back to school for a cs degree.

Do the tax amount and benefit deduction for 120k (which is shit), and remember in the US its not just federal income tax, it's FICA and state income tax, then minus contributions for health insurance and other benefits and the amount you earn is about 50 to 60% of that. 120k for a specialized high skill career is low and only just above starting. OK, so basically you have to join a union to get into the apprenticeship to get the skills. That is hold be step one obviously. But once you’re in you won’t have to labor or anything other than work the price you’re assigned to. In some states they work all year (west) but in snow states the ground freezes and you get laid off from anywhere between November-April at the latest. You work a lot in the summer just so you know. Like sometimes 15 hour days. But generally 8-10 and then you get that precious neet time in the winter and can draw unemployment (more in some states). It’s Kind of a hidden secret I’ve always kept in the back of my head. But I have other pursuits atm.

In all honesty bro if I did it over I would study the drink recipes (YouTube my friend) practice your pour count with an empty liquor bottle and a pour spout (use a jigger pourer to measure, and order the bar tools on Amazon). A barback can potentially make more than a lot of the tenders (not the best ones ofc) if he works at a nightclub or resort. Pretty much. In order to even get the position of a driver, you have to work at the warehouse first, and start from there. Which means you're guaranteed OT but you're just a mere package handler. And that's the worst job to have.
