has little to do with trading or any particular profession. people abuse drugs because they are drug abusers - or they have developed full blown drug addiction.

there is no great mystery to solve here, and there is nothing particularly unique about stock brokers imo.

TLT doesn't have the massive long dated ones that EDV has. From the bottom in 2018 to the covid bond high, TLT ran around 50% while EDV ran 70% because EDV's bonds are on average 20+ years while TLT has a mix of shorter ones.

Options and other derivatives have several inputs: asset price, strike price, volatility, and time to expiry (as well as risk-free rate).
Using calculus to take the derivative, you can find the rates of change for these variables w.r.t. each other variable.
>Delta: Change in contract value wrt asset price
>Theta: Change in contract value wrt time
>Vega: Change in contract value wrt volatility
>Rho: Change in contract value wrt interest rates
>Gamma: Change in Delta wrt asset price

You can account for every known value ahead of time (strike, asset, time, etc) EXCEPT for implied volatility. All of this is a fancy way to say "given a set of values, the contract must be priced at X, where X is it's IV"

>> No.53066445

>>53066391
The Black-Scholes formula is a mathematical equation used to determine the fair price or theoretical value for a European call or put option, using assumptions of constant volatility, no dividends, and efficient markets. The formula can be used to calculate the value of a call option, which gives the holder the right to buy an underlying asset at a certain price (the strike price) at any time before the option expires. It can also be used to calculate the value of a put option, which gives the holder the right to sell the underlying asset at a certain price at any time before the option expires.

The Black-Scholes formula is based on the following assumptions:

The underlying asset follows a geometric Brownian motion with constant drift and volatility.
The option can only be exercised at expiration.
There are no dividends paid on the underlying asset during the life of the option.
The risk-free rate is constant and known.
The market is efficient and the price of the option reflects all available information.

The Black-Scholes formula can be used to calculate the fair price of a call option (C) as follows:

C = S * N(d1) - X * e^(-r * t) * N(d2)

where:

S is the current price of the underlying asset
X is the strike price of the option
t is the time to expiration in years
r is the risk-free interest rate
N(d1) and N(d2) are the cumulative standard normal distribution functions of d1 and d2, respectively, which are defined as:

d1 = (ln(S/X) + (r + (sigma^2)/2) * t) / (sigma * sqrt(t))

d2 = d1 - sigma * sqrt(t)

sigma is the annualized standard deviation of the underlying asset's returns, also known as its volatility.

The formula for calculating the fair price of a put option (P) is similar:

P = X * e^(-r * t) * N(-d2) - S * N(-d1)

where N(-d1) and N(-d2) are the cumulative standard normal distribution functions of -d1 and -d2, respectively.

Have something that can be fairly risk off until the market shits itself next year or so. Whether this is cash, a high-yield GIC, or an inflation-protected bond is up to you. You can also short SPY or long VIX if you're feeling more active.
Personally, I think the price of wheat and other grains will be expensive as well. Over the next 5-10 years, I think water and nuclear are good sectors.

>Can someone explain the Black-Scholes formula using words

What exactly are you asking?
The symbol that looks most like an 'o' is a lowercase 'sigma'. The standard deviation. If you don't know what that is you should go watch some videos about it.

ln is 'The natural logarithm of a number is its logarithm to the base of the mathematical constant e'. You don't have to think about this too hard. You just Google it or get some machine to take it when you need it.

The rest is just what it looks like. Math is easy once you break it down into digestible parts and look at it every day.
But still, what the frick is someone who doesn't know enough math to read the model going to do with the model?
You just go on optionsprofitcalculator if you want to know which options to buy.
People use the Black-Scholes model to price options most generally and then math PhDs come up with their own models. I've heard the Black-Scholes model is shit and I've heard it is good. Probably a good one size fits all. That was before a massive AI model was probably created to price options that we don't even know about.

Off the top of my head.

There's the delta term which is dV/dS
Rate of change of option value with respect to asset value

There's the 1/2sigmad^2V/dS^2 that's gamma
The rate of change of delta

There's dV/dt that's theta. Option value with respect to time.

There's -rV

Then I think it's all equal to zero.

Delta tells you the rate at which the option value will increase/decrease with respect to the underlying asset value. E.g. options about to expire will have a delta of 1.
So if the underlying moves by $1 so will the option value.

Options that deep out of the money will have a delta of like 0.2 so with every dollar increase of the underlying. The option value will increase by 0.2

Gamma tells you the rate at which delta will increase or decrease.

Options contracts that are going into the money or significant theta decay you will see an increase in the magnitude of gamma. Is basically the equivalent of acceleration in the real world. Therefore by the same logic delta is analogous to velocity.

Theta tells you how time is causing the option value to decay. If you have like a year to expiry. Theta will be low. When you have a week left that's when theta decay really kicks in and eats the value of your contract.

About to go to bed chief (yh I'm from the you Kay). If you want a more coherent answer. Ask again tommoz. Tbh seen a few anons talking about Vanna and charm. I wonder if we could spin off into a options trading general or something.

Why?
You're not buying spreads are you?
You buy and sell a call or put above and below the strike price and the bet becomes double or nothing. It eliminates the value decay of time and you don't worry about the IV. Forget about the IV and all the greeks. I told you, you use optionsprofitcalculator dot com to figure out which one to buy and which one to sell. Do '2 legs'.

None of what you said there makes any sense.
You want to go short? You buy a put and sell a put on either side of the strike price.
You want to go long? Do it with calls.

It splits the profit and loss very cleanly above and below the strike price becoming more and more of a loss or gain as the expiration approaches.
I've said enough about spreads. If you use options in any other way you are probably a sucker of some kind. A simple one or a complicated one.

i guess the problem with them is that they tend to lag and if you are truly schizo then inflation measurement they are based off is a fraction of what actual inflation is
"For an investor looking solely for inflation protection, in most instances TIPS provide a good hedging
asset. Moreover, Kothari and Shanken (2004)19 reconstructed an index of inflation-linked bonds back
to the 1950s, which suggests that the inflation-linked instruments provide better diversification benefits
against equities than nominal bonds. However, as noted before, TIPS are backward looking and as such
tend not to perfectly hedge multiple surprises. As well as this, in most cases, an investor must suffer a
return drag for holding TIPS as opposed to nominal bonds due to premium paid for inflation protection."
