>Kidults, who tend to spend more on toys, have a great fondness for cartoons, superheroes and collectibles that remind them of their childhood. They buy merchandise such as action figures, Lego sets and dolls that might typically be considered “for kids.”
>However, in recent years, toy makers have created product lines just for these consumers, realizing that demand is high for this generation of adults who still want to have fun.

>“The definition of adulthood has definitely evolved,” said Jeremy Padawer, chief brand officer at toy company Jazwares. “What it used to mean, to be an adult, was to be a very upstanding, serious member of society. And to do that you had to demonstrate it intellectually, emotionally, in every other single way.”

Why aren’t you profiting off Kidults, /biz/?

No, fully-grown adults reverting back to childish pursuits is not evolution, far from it. It's a symptom of an incredibly sick society.

Manchildren, particularly Anglosaxon manchildren don't want to grow up and face the reality of Current Year. As soon as they stick their heads above the parapets they are bombarded by a world and domestic culture which hates and mocks them. So they retreat into what they remember to be a safe haven of their past where they can live in their imagination.

Antique Dealer here, frequently lurk /biz/ threads and would like to contribute. If anyone has any questions on the antique market, collectables market, toy market please ask and I will do my best to help. I like studying what sells, as well as the people who buy specific items.

During Covid sales for Toys/Video Games/Soi went up dramatically. Instead of spending money on food, the prices of collectables skyrocketed and we got through selling lots of vintage action figures, games etc. Speculation is rife in the market and fortunately it appears the market is slowing down- unfortunately people are running out of money as inflation creeps.

What struck me as brutal was the reversion to childhood memories/nostalgia as times got worse. People idolize video games/toys, to the point they build soi shrines to their specific collectable of choice. I have seen soi shrines to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nintendo, Batman etc- the shrines grow into mancave hideouts. After awhile they all appear the same, like a mental illness that has physically manifested. Different variations of product, same result.

Anyway ask away and can help with speculation, future prices etc

I own like $50k worth of Lego and around 3,000 individual figures.

My most valuable set is a unopened 10123 Cloud City I bought for $600 that is now worth $8000.

Lego has appreciated more than any other "investment" for me, and I just buy it because I like it and it reminds me of being a kid.

It’s the former it seems like.
>This kidulting trend started to rise in prominence around a decade ago, as superhero movies and comic book culture exploded into the mainstream. It became more consequential to the bottom lines of toy companies in the last five years, said James Zahn, editor in chief of “The Toy Book” and senior editor of “The Toy Insider.”

>Toy manufacturers such as Lego embraced these consumers and created lines, often tied to nostalgic entertainment properties, just for this cohort. Hasbro’s Black Series for action figures, is a prime example of this, tapping into the desire for high-quality Star Wars and Marvel collectibles. Even Mattel has lines from Barbie and Hot Wheels that are designed specifically for this group of buyers.

>Toy companies have even begun creating their own television and movie content in order to support toy lines. Mattel launched its own internal movie company and is set to release “Barbie” in July 2023 and Hasbro bought eOne and will set “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” in theaters in March.

>These films are not designed for young kids, instead catering to this older group of toy-loving consumers.

>In the last 12 months ending September, the kidult group represented 60% of the dollar growth in the industry, despite accounting for only a quarter of sales, according to NPD’s Checkout data.

>“So, it’s been a huge windfall,” said Juli Lennett, vice president and industry advisor for NPD’s U.S. toys practice.

Vague question, but how would you recommend getting into antique dealing? I'd assume it's ideal to do a year or two of networking, poring over the details of every store/auction/etc you can find, etc at first. The guy from Chamonix Antiques said it's best to focus on a certain category (rugs or whatever) at first, but would be curious on your thoughts.

I just imagine it's a thing where 99% of people who enter it get in way over their heads within the first month

Thats pretty accurate actually. You have to build a network, learn what sells, what doesn't, how to sell on what platform, fees/taxes/costs, gas, car etc.

If you are serious I would do it as a side job first, then transition into it once you have a few years experience and a safety net.
