It would be laughably easy to have a position of shares with CS that's institutionally sized and just swap them to plan right before a reporting date before swapping them back in case shit goes wrong and you have to guarantee you have those shares. Of course a just as likely explanation would be people are doing direct purchases through CS with an investment plan and have been for a while in lieu of purchasing on a broker and then registering, which would mean all of their shit is not in book. Either way the next quarterly report should be telling as to which is the case, if the number is up bigly then it was literally just people setting and forgetting purchase orders and never logging in to swap their shit to book.

Plan shares are held as directstock, which means they're still removed from the DTCC but held by CS's broker (BofA) since you can't register one share to multiple people for each fraction of it that they own. Book shares are held as Class A Common Stock and are directly registered to the person that owns them as well as being removed from the DTCC, that is why you cannot hold fractional shares in book entry. It makes a huge difference, and the proof is that in every quarterly report GME makes it a point to identify that they're reporting direct registered ownership of their Class A Common Stock - which with CS, is only the booked shares.
