I don't get it. Nobody actually qualified for this job is going to want it unless it pays 150k or better, and they're too cheap to pay that. Have you seen other shit like this?

ever heard of the "full-stack developer" (1 guy instead of frontend dev, db guy, app developer, tester and sometimes even designer lol) - it's basically the same thing here, just with data instead of webapp, and there is even less agreement what it should mean - in some companies they develop models requiring domain expertise - in others they mostly clean data and do monthly KPIs in PowerBI

if all you need is a some basic customization of your online shop why not hire generalist? similarly who in their right mind would hire 3 different specialist if all you need is some pretty KPI graphs?

the skills mentioned on your pic are even mentioned when hiring "just" data analysts or even other roles, knowing how to code no longer makes one special in corporate world, nobody want you to write the device drivers, but even mere accountants at my last job were writing excel macros and other scripts to automate the processes

I have a biochem major and a math minor as well.
You will not get an entry level job that pays $90k.
But, after working in a lab for 2 years, you can get a job that pays around $80k.
You can go the PhD route, and after you get your PhD in 5 years, and then do a post doc for a few years, you might get a 6 figure paying job.
Data scientists are making an entry around 42-50k a year.
No one is paying someone 150k a year with no experience.
Even brand new PhD grads are not making 6 figures unless if they have actual patents that have made profit in the private sector, which is incredibly rare.

Chemistry, virtually none. A tidbit of synthesis, but we could generally buy everything we needed. I’d call myself more of a molecular biologist than a chemist, but i still know way more chemistry than your typical molecular biologist, which gets them hard

I really enjoyed working on this type of stuff. I worked in a stem cell developmental research lab for awhile in undergrad until I figured out that I was working to the bone for pure evil. but still, I think there is real value in that field.
I chose to go the mil/aero route tho, which is lucrative but also pozzed. so I really can't criticize. I like to think that I work on things that help people now, but I don't know...
anyways I wish I was still doing gene selection insertion and screening sometimes

You seem cool fren. I think we’d get along. My postdoc was at a National lab, so military adjacent. Biotech is cool and still burgeoning, imo. Now that I’m working for big pharm, I feel like more of a cog in the machine, but I had a decent amount of freedom in my PhD and postdoc, so it was cool to fuck around with random ideas sometimes. I’ll miss that about academia.

I am white. I figure I got into Caltech because one of my professors who wrote a rec letter for me did their PhD at Caltech, because otherwise I was only a so-so candidate. Connections always help.

Oof if they don’t want you to leave, are they at least decent enough people to still write you a positive recommendation? If they will, then it’s all good, but I have heard of vindictive people writing bad letters to try to keep people from leaving certain positions.

GPA doesn’t matter much as far as I know. GPA and GRE scores might get you sorted into the automatic “no” pile if they’re too low, but beyond that it really has more to do with your rec letters and research experience when it comes to phd programs. I had maybe an A- average GPA-wise and I didn’t even give it a second thought
