Much cheaper than paying $800 per month with also full coverage payments of $220 don’t forget the warranty payment of $60 per month and then taxes and fees on top. Oh and new cars have problems too good luck getting your warranty to repair it. They are not your friends.

If you can’t figure out how to buy a quality cheap low mileage car and not get ripped off for it then you shouldn’t Be browsing biz and finance boards. This is not for you.

Other than that just preventative maintenance, oil changes, serpentine belt since it was getting old, changed filter and half the transmission fluid since it had never been done, stuff like that. I bought a 2007 Honda Fit at the start of 2020 for $6,400 with 59,000 miles on it. Learned car repair from roommate and have been able to do 95% of work myself or with him.

COSTS OF OWNERSHIP, SINCE 02/2020 PURCHASE:
>Shop repair & parts: $443
>Self repair & parts: $984
>Gear (roof rack, etc.): $380
>Cleaning: $158
>Insurance, Plates & Reg, etc.: $1,347
>Tolls, tickets, parking: $379
>Gas: $1,510
TOTAL: $5,201 ($149/month)

Barely drive it, and for the mostly just bike everywhere, including groceries, etc. via a large pack on my back. Have rain pants, coat, and wear a hat, for biking in the rain. Mostly only drive it to leave town, or if buying furniture. The $150/month is well worth it, to be able to go out into the mountains, or just get out of the city, as I wish. Women also are offput by carless men (kek). I also lived in it (by choice), for 3 months in Denver, and surrounding national/state forests, and have moved cross country with it full of boxes, multiple times. I tend to become aloof and feel the need to flee cities, often, but with a hatchback + $30/month storage shed, I know I always have a place, no matter the situation.

There are plenty around $12k although they're higher mileage (100k+). Of course the reason Corollas, Covics, etc. hold their value so well is they're super reliable and people can put hundreds of thousands of miles on them.

Most cars are going to depreciate faster. And you're also not going to be putting $2k a year of repairs into an older car either. I drive a 20 year old car and on average I've probably dumped $100-200 a year into routine maintenance and repairs since I've owned it. That includes tires, oil changes, etc. It does help a lot being able to do your own repairs. Investing a couple hundred bucks in a jack, jack stands, socket set, etc. pays for itself. Get oil on sale, Pennzoil was doing s rebate earlier this year and I got four 5 qt containers of fill synthetic for like $11/ea.

If you have a significant amount of retirement savings it really doesn't matter. Say you had $2m in a 401k at the start of 2022 and now it's down to $1.5m. You withdrawal $100k a year in income to love on. The point of keeping it in the narket is its high annual rate of growth (10%+ per year). Over the long run your retirement is still growing faster than you can withdrawal from it allowing you to live on the capital gains and not have to touch the principal.

If you have it in less aggressive investments that are only averaging a 3% return, but you're withdrawing 5% to live on, this is now unsustainable and there could come a time where you run out.

furthermore, the issue with older cars is that parts have a lifetime. Unless you're preventatively changing EVERYTHING (Including things that still work), you're going to eventually stall. (also factor in time + parts for all that preventative maintenance).

You can buy a 1 year old used car with 10k miles and skip the -20% new car depreciation tax. Keeps the warranty and all parts are guaranteed for at least 60k miles, which is 4-5 years of stress free and reliable driving.

Of course. The sweet spot is always going to be somewhere in the middle. Brand new or less than a couple year old vehicles still tend to depreciate really fast (the supply chain issues during COVID are an outlier). Something closer to 5-7 years old would be the best bang for your buck.

Depends on make/model obviously. Odds are most 2020 cars (outside of a few manufacturers and certain models) are much more unreliable than their 2009 counterparts.

More complexity in newer automobiles for greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions, etc. leads to more points of failure. We truly won't know how reliable the modern crop of 2020+ automobiles are until 2030 or 2040. Beyond that, most states have laws that prevent you from re-registering your car with a check engine light on, so have fun spending 1000s to chase down a phantom emissions problem on your 2020 "eco-friendly" machine just so you can pass inspection.

Like I said, if you're a broke faggot who doesn't make that much money ITS OKAY. You can save nickels and dimes "wrenching" on your car, but thankfully I'm far past that point in my life. I much rather spend my weekend doing something I enjoy than sifting through a 500-page manual with trying to diagnose 20 year old electrical gremlins. I made money to NOT have to live like a brown 3rd worlder

the status, attention, reliability, and comforts of a modern car far outweigh the "Wrenching" savings for me

>More complexity in newer automobiles for greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions, etc. leads to more points of failure
Complexity isn't the killer, direct injected turbocharged DOHC w/ VVTL engines have been around for a while now and you can definitely make those very reliable if you want to. What actually kills cars is value engineering, parts are aggressively pared down to their bare minimum essentials so they're just good enough to last the simulated acceptable lifetime to save costs in initial assembly and make more money through aftermarket spare parts sales.
>Beyond that, most states have laws that prevent you from re-registering your car with a check engine light on, so have fun spending 1000s to chase down a phantom emissions problem on your 2020 "eco-friendly" machine just so you can pass inspection
If there's one thing modern cars are good at, it's self-diagnostics. OBDII based troubleshooting is a shitty useless meme, but if you have proper access to the car's systems (ISTA+ fucking rules) then you can literally just press a button and have the little wizard living inside the hard drive figure everything out for you.

Sure nothing lasts forever, but all wear items and electronics in modern day automobiles are notoriously worse in comparison straight off the assembly line - whether that's due to design, poor QA in China, or whatever else I don't know but it's empirically true. Factor that in with increased complexity in the overall system itself, and you have a poor argument that it's worth spending 30k-40k+ on a car above something as equally or more reliable for 5k-8k or less.

OBDII is great for troubleshooting, I agree, but it's not as you describe. I have never used ISTA+ on a BMW, but in my experience, you still need to know quite a bit about diagnostics even with an professional scan tool (if you're not trying to be a parts changer). Even so, I drive a '99 that has OBDII - you'd need to drive a nearly 30 year old car to even go back to a OBDI system. More modern cars just have more le ebin senzors for OBDII purposes, which again, are more potential points of failure.

so what type of car would you suggest for someone who is right after college, is driving a shitbox, makes decent money but not a lot and feels like you describe? i'm from europe btw. was looking at mercedes benz class a or audi a4 but they're too expensive even used (around 20k euros), i can afford up to 10k euros with cash.

Some Renault or Peugeot garbage?

White men will boast about how cheap they made their shitbox keep running and it’s basically the only thing they got going for themselves
Everyone could in theory order a toolbox on Amazon and watch a 30 min YouTube video

Your life must be sad to brag about doing boring sensible stuff
You can brag about having a big family if anyone had one

Even if I had to repair my beater every month (which I don't), how is this any different than paying half a grand payments every month? Between my insurance and tank of gas for my car, I might be pushing $200 CAD per month. This is my total, regular car expense. The only mandatory shit I had to replace to keep it running were the power steering pump, alternator, spark plugs, and the rear brake lines, all of which was cheap to purchase, and I installed myself, and this is over a 5+ year period. I paid $3000 initially for my car, it's a 2005 model.
